A splendid 55th Reunion masterminded by BillMcCarthy and HerbHirschland worked beautifully in the warm days of June 13-15. We have left it to Peter Cardozo to give you the details in his own inimitable style which, in case you have not heard, earned Peter a citation of Honorable Mention awarded at the Class Officers Weekend.
Peter may not be reporting an interesting discussion class President Bert MacMannis had with a student directly following our class meeting. This young man was in charge of supervising the hall in Tuck and seeing that all our needs were fulfilled. Bert had mentioned our class seal during his report to the class, suggesting that it was the only such logo extant that still featured the Indian symbol. This apparently moved the young student, who confessed that he was a full-blooded Indian. He said, "All of my friends wouldn't necessarily agree with me, but I think it is great that you carry on the old tradition with your logo. I sense you do so with great pride in the Indian. " Bert thought that was right on!
Talking about young students, you will perhaps recall that some few months ago I quoted from a letter of thanks received by Treasurer Cornie Miller from Adam Nelson, an applicant from Atlanta, Ga., who received some '39 money to make a trip to Hanover to look over the College. He's starting his sophomore year next month, and as reported earlier was an oft-used lineman on our 1993 football team. He has just been appointed All-Ivy in track and field and "stole the show" in the New England Championships by setting a personal record and winning the shot-putt with a toss of 58 feet,l inch, and placing second in the discus. He also won the shot at the Heps and the IC4A meets.
We heard from Bud Pratt, who had been planning to make our 55 th but had to bow to back surgery which was scheduled at thesame time. We trust it went swimmingly.
The program of the reunion memorial service honoring those who have left us listed 274 names, which included Jack Sinclair, who died on March 18.
It did not include the names of Jack Cathcart, who died on April 13 of Alzheimer's, or Phil Sellinger who died on April 11 of causes unknown at this time.
In a letter from two '94s, we were advised of the Historical Archives Project that they are undertaking at The Dartmouth. They are attempting to document the newspaper's development and wish to encourage any who worked for The D to contact them at 6175 Robinson Hall with thoughts or info to aid their project.
And finally, our next gathering is set for the Yale game weekend, which includes Dartmouth Night, festivities in front of Dartmouth Hall, and the bonfire. Don't miss it.
