Having faithfully attended and received instruction at the annual meeting of the class secretaries during Class Officer's Weekend in Hanover, I think you should see drastic improvements as I start my second year. Sixty-twos in attendance were Tom Komarek, Charlie Giersch, GeneGasbarro, Bill Sadd (who received the Class Treasurer of the Year award), and KentHutchinson. Also in Hanover were JohnClark and Dan Tompkins to present our '62 Teaching Fellowship. More in next column about this year's recipient.
Two news bits conveyed to class officers: Ten Dartmouth students and graduates participated in the Winter Olympics; and ten percent of Dartmouth's annual budget comes from the Alumni Fund (highest percentage of the Ivys). So keep the pledges and payments coming, and let's support Head Agent Ben Vogel and his faithful agents.
H. Peter Norstrand Esq. writes that he recently joined State Street Global Advisors, the money-management arm of State Street Bank & Trust Company of Boston, with particular responsibilities to create and market real-estate investments for domestic and international clients. Strand's wife, Kathy is manager of client relations and communications for another major real-estate advisory firm.
Tom Laris reports from California that he is president of Ex-Trade Securities, "America's largest electronic brokerage firm." Tom reports that "the tide is much more impressive than his responsibilities and compensation." But living in Palo Alto and avoiding earthquakes has tremendous psychic benefits, Tom!
American General Corporation recently announced the promotion of Stephen D. Bickel to chairman and chief executive officer of the Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company. We know that Steve's mathematics background at Dartmouth will keep him in good stead in his new position. Steve, send us news from Houston ASAP!
Congratulations to Gerald Elfendahl on his daughter's recent graduation from Smith College. After graduation ceremonies Gerry, with his wife, Judy, was to visit Dartmouth for the first time in 34 years. And congratulations to all '62 s whose children graduated this year.
Colin Harley reports making a stop in Ahoskie, N.C., to visit Rosbon D.B. Whedbee. Colin reports that, "Bunny is a flamboyant, Tennessee Williamsesque trial lawyer with hours and hours of fascinating yarns to spin." Apparently Colin, who traveled on his Harley Davidson Heritage Soft-Tail Special from Daytona, Fla., to his Greenwich home, must also have many fascinating stories.
Michael Howard will shortly take early retirement after 27 exciting years of international business with Levi Strauss Europe. Mike plans to move to London with wife Ngila who hopes to re-enter the interior-decorating business. Mike should look up A. Patrick Giles, Esq., whom I recently visited in London and in New York City. Pat is most excited about our 55 th birthday party in San Francisco this coming May and is encouraging "all hearty classmates to join him aboard the '62 car as we train to Frisco." Kent Hutchinson will be providing us with the latest plans. Hutch also encourages '62s to attend a mini-reunion at Quechee Lakes this fall for Homecoming Weekend. Classmates will convene in the Hopkins Center for post-bonfire festivities.
On a more somber note, word has been received of Alan Bryant's death on January 9. We extend class's condolences to Alan's wife, Karen, and his children Hilary and Christopher. Alan's obituary will appear in a later issue.
