A reunion committee planning session was held at my place in Connecticut on July 31, with ten classmates and David Orr of the College in attendance. We reviewed a preliminary budget and began refining the schedule of events for the four-day weekend of June 13 -16, 1996. We generally agreed we want to emphasize the family nature of the reunion in our event planning. We will try to ensure that there are activities, presentations, and programs to interest everyone in your family. There has been an unfortunate trend in recent reunions of other classes toward more classmates attending without their families, perhaps due to school scheduling conflicts or even cost (but remember, the higher our expected "headcount" based on your responses to reunion mailings this fall, the lower we will be able to set the per-person charges). We encourage you all strongly to begin planning now for this reunion to be a family event for your family too, perhaps as part of a New England summer vacation (White Mountains, Maine beaches, and Cape Cod beckon): The more families we have present, the more fun it will be, and the more successful the reunion overall.
Roving reporter Nels Armstrong reports that he has bought a house in West Leb. and is settling into the Upper Valley, "trying to do more than just work. While I can't match the Hanover Inn," he says, "I do welcome anyone who might be visiting and wants a few of the comforts of home." Nels adds: "Jim Wallace was in town recently. Jim was kind enough to stop by my office (Sorry I missed you, Jim) while his daughter Robin was looking at Dartmouth as a possible place to spend her four years of college. Ray Abruzzo deserves mention as well. While I didn't see him either, I sat next to his lovely wife, Pamela, and daughter Carolyn at a recent performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in Hopkins Center during the sophomore parents' weekend. Carolyn is carrying on the Dartmouth tradition and planning to graduate in June of '97. Tom Wolf and I had a great time together during the recent Horizons Program here on campus. Tom, visiting with his wife, Frances, and kids Sarah and Katherine, looks really good. Living down in Pennsylvania, Tom is enjoying family life and heading up his own business."
Albert Lamarre writes, "I work for the University of California at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where I use my geology background to clean up contaminated groundwater at the site. Recently I had the tremendous experience of spending a week in Kazakhstan working with Kazakh scientists to begin the cleanup of one of their nuclear test sites."
And Dick jachens '4l passed along an article on our semi-official class pianist, Mike Markaverich. "Mike," he says, "is still busy playing at various clubs around Sarasota. We had him bring his keyboard and speakers to our '4l mini-reunion luncheon last year and he was great. He's also a member of the Sarasota Dartmouth Club and I had the pleasure of eating and talking with Mike at one of their gatherings." Look for Mike's act at the 25th Reunion!
