With sunny weather and brilliant New England fall colors, our mini-reunion during Homecoming Weekend, October 14—15, was a great success. The last-minute win over Yale, multiple opportunities for socializing with classmates and friends, and what seemed to be record attendance of about 38 classmates, many with wives and other family members, made it a memorable event. If this is an indication of what we will experience next June at our 40th Reunion, everyone should sign up now!
Class events included a reception following the alumni parade, Dartmouth Night festivities and traditional bonfire, an executive committee meeting, class tables at the pregame luncheon, a reception following the game, and the class dinner. Among the classmates I had not seen for a long time were MattWeinberg, whose son is a member of the class of '98, Dick Forsberg, DickTargett, EliotSmith, and Dave Strieker. The Class of 1955 Award was presented to Bruce Alexander by Peter Thompson at the dinner Saturday night. Bruce was recognized for his many contributions to his profession, his community, and the College, and received an inscribed Dartmouth print.
The class executive committee held its annual meeting at the Hanover Inn Saturday morning. Much of the meeting was devoted to a series of reports by John French and members of his 40th Reunion Committee regarding preparations and the events planned for June 12—15. Our class now has acquired enough seniority to command excellent facilities and services. You will have received the details of this from John directly. Other reports were given by class officers and committee chairs. According to Brooks Parker, the class contributed $180,901 to the 1994 Alumni Fund, with participation at 65 percent. JoeMathewson said that some 70 classmates had pledged more than $670,000 toward the reunion gift goal of $1,055,000. The class gift fund contributed $5,500 to the Hood Museum and Athletic Sponsor program during the year. Our scholarship fund supported two children of a classmate with some $3,682 in grants. The purpose of the scholarship fund was redefined to read: "for current use to support children of classmates with their education, and, at some point in the future, to present the College with a designated 1995 Scholarship Fund."
Ace Hall has offered to host a mini-reunion in Stuart, Fla., in early 1996. Mark your calendars for that winter-break opportunity.
Class newsletter editor emeritus Capt. JohnDinan of the U.S. Navy gave a brief update on his continuing adventures on land and at sea. In recent months he has been assigned to a carrier near Somalia, and he provided some unique insight into conditions in Mogadishu. According to his wife, Peggy, he has acquired a 12-cylinder red Jaguar but has some difficulty fitting into it. It sounds a bit like John has reverted to his college days. But it is obvious that he is greatly enjoying navy life and plans to continue for several more years. The Dinans are currently in port at Charleston, S.C.
