Starting off the New Year with coast to coast coverage, I went first to DaveAndrew up in Portland, Maine. Dave is officially retired from his business, which dealt with paintings. However, he's busy now preparing material for a book about a notable 18th-century New Englander, one Samuel Waldo. Down the coast a bit was PaulAllen, in the Heritage Hills section of Somers, N.Y.He put 43 years into the industrial design business in N.Y.C. Paul started at Dartmouth, was in the V-12, and ultimately got his degree from LaFayette. He keeps busy now as prexy of his condo association.
I located Bill Ashley in sunny Florida. He's been retired from CBS-TV for several years. After retiring he spent three and a half years in Brazil. Been in the Miami area the past five years. His wife is head of a bank in Florida. And what does Bill do? Babysit for their nine year old child. How about that! I talked to Earle Angstadt, who is still in Florida, though I actually called him at his home in Darien, Conn. Wife Suzanne answered, telling me they were in Florida. Ah, these modern inventions. They are spending the winter in Vero Beach.Earle was CEO of McCall Pattern Co. from 1970 to 1987, when he retired. Says he enjoys retirement immensely and plays a bit of golf. He told me his handicap, and I was overwhelmed by his honesty.
I skipped out to the West Coast and spoke to Ray Arlt. Long time no speak, Ray. He's had an exciting career: he was with American Optical, Singer Co., and finished up with 20 years at University of California, Santa Barbara. He was a financial aid administrator there. Ray was always an enthusiastic Dartmouth man. He asked me to give a great big "hello" to all the class. Done, Ray.
Without much effort you will perceive that I ran through the "A's" in our class roster. If you're a Wyeth or a Young, be patient. I'll get to you. One "A" I didn't mention was Adams, as in Tom Adams, our head class agent. Yes, it's that time again, and Tom and his men will be on the prowl for the Alumni Fund. Think 50th!
Bob Poet was in Hanover in December for the Alumni Council meeting. He's now our representative on the council for athletic matters. A wise choice, he being an athlete of some renown. Frank Guarini (our only congressman l4 years) was elected to a three year term on the board of trustees of Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J.
Since I last wrote I have been advised that two of our classmates have died: WilliamMartin Cooper and Donald A. Alvarez. Our deepest sympathy goes out to their families.
