First we had a classmate who graduated from Dartmouth before graduating from high school. Now we have one who is starting over again at the bottom, after a career of presiding over colleges and universities and collecting honorary doctorates. Fran Horn just spent a week in Senator Claiborne Pell's Washington office as a congressional senior citizen intern. Says the senator: "lam particularly pleased to have Dr. Horn, with his background in education, foreign relations, and elderly health-care issues."

Last month I took you to 1930's pre- C.O.W. gathering at Bob Keene's. That was Thursday, May 1. Friday was registration day for the C.O.W., with many diversions available for those who arrived in time. The first official function was dinner for all at the Alumni Gym, with speeches and awards. Our gang of ten (six officers, a wife, a daughter, and two girlfriends) was early enough to grab a table front and center, right under the speakers, appropriate for our 85-to-90-ish eyes and ears.

Saturday morning we had our own individual breakfast meetings from 8 to 10. The secretaries' meeting, led by new Alumni News Editor Theresa D'Orsi, I thought was the best of any I've attended, partly, no doubt, because I discovered that Theresa is not just an answering machine, as I had assumed from all previous contacts, but rather a real, live female-type person (and attractive). Editor Jay Heinrichs also participated, but we had to share his time with the class treasurers. I take this opportunity to congratulate Jay, Theresa, and their predecessors, as the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, for the seventh consecutive year, has been judged by the Committee for the Advancement of Education the best alumni magazine in the nation (from more than 600 entries). With due modesty and PC, Jay told the secretaries that a major factor was the quality of our Class Notes. After those meetings there was a general session on the state of the College, followed by a final buffet luncheon at the gym. Many then departed homeward, leaving Bob Keene, Ginny Chambers, Geneand Genie Magenau, Doris McClory,Burt Crandell, and me for one last celebration, dinner at the Inn.
