The conversation continues. As I reported last month, Bill Hartley has not abandoned our class. Writing from Hong Kong where he is anchoring both for CNBC and NBC Asia, Bill is as perplexed as were the rest of us who may have picked up the gaff in the May issue of DAM. He went on to note that the countdown has begun for China to take control of Hong Kong. For the next 50 years it will be "one country—two systems, as the Chinese are inordinately fond of repeating. But Hong Kongers and expatriates here are living in a dream world if they believe that. The Chinese are signalling that while there will be two systems in the business and financial worldtie Chinese aren't about to kill the golden goose—the rest of Hong Kong is going to learn what it is like to live under authoritarian rule."

Continuing his work at the Yale University School of Medicine is WalterAnyan, where he is professor of pediatrics and chief of adolescent medicine. He has been involved in the study of the appraisal and management of patients with eating disorders, an area of research in which Yale excels.

August of this year was a big month for George Haines and his family. Ellen and he celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, their son George IV got married, and George himself "hit 60" and retired from the Foreign Service after 35 years. During those 35 years he and Ellen lived in nine cities, seven countries on four continents, learned four languages, and "a little bit about this world we all share."

The Dartmouth Athletics Endowment is another step closer to it goal of $10 million thanks to a recent leadership gift made by Bob Downey. It's not too late to include such a gift in your financial planning.
