Clark Griffiths acted as my reporter-correspondent for the great class of '57s latest mini-reunion. Many thanks to Wendie and Howie Howland for hosting an outstanding mini-reunion and clambake at their home in Barlows Landing on Cape Cod. This is the second mini they have hosted and even though the turnout was not as large as hoped, a good time was had by all. Conversation tended toward retirement and some of our ailments, but it was great to see everyone!
Seven states were represented with Caroline and Sherm Mills coming the longest distance from Springfield, Va. The second-place distance record was set by Ann Lee and Dick Bugbee from Chadds Ford, Pa. Other participants included: Willa and Gren Bunker from Watchung, N.T. Happy and Clark Griffiths from Lebanon, N.H.; Lois and Dick Mann from Walpole, Mass.; Susan and Charlie White from Brunswick, Maine; Bob Marchant from Old Saybrook, Conn.; and Dave Smith from No. Falmouth, Mass.
Incidentally, Howie has just succeeded Jack Cramer as president of the Dartmouth Club of Cape Cod!
Dave Cook and Celeste Hartwell were married August 10th on a beautiful day in New London, N.H. Joan Weber, Celeste s sister and widow of Chris Weber, was matron of honor. Dave pulled together most of the original members of the Indian Chiefs, who played some great jazz. (They will also be playing for our 40th next June.) Al Shapiro played with the Chiefs there with his wife, Marcia. Other '57s attending were Jean and Mike Smith, Happy and Clark Griffiths, and Bob Hamilton. Dave reports to me that he and Celeste have just returned from two weeks hiking around the cliffs of Cornwall and up the coast to Bath, England. Not only did they have beautiful walking and wonderful places to stay but they also brought two steady weeks of good weather with them. A rarity in that part of the world. Dave also reported that the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge overnight and mountain climb will precede our 40th Reunion next June. It s being organized primarily by Angus Russell '53, along with Dave. More to come later but I can assure you that at our 35 th it was an outstanding segment of the festivities, and I hope you will join us. I am already signed on.
Bill Muldoon has been named publisher of the Fort Morgan Times. This event is the next in a string of interesting assignments in the publishing world. The Times is a part of the Denver Post network. Bill is vice president and president-elect of the Colorado Press Association. After Dartmouth, Bill did a stint in the Marines and remains active as a member of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association and the Distinguished Shooters Association.
The 40th Reunion Committee gathered September 11th at Dan Goggins' office for a first planning meeting. You will be hearing more shortly and we look forward to a strong turnout next June. I hope you have received our first letter and have responded stating your intentions. If it's still sitting on your desk waiting for a decision, please give a call to some other friends and make a date to join us in Hanover. More next month.
