I'll bring you up-to-date on some men you haven't heard about in a while. I called Dick Loos. He lives in Bethesda, Md. Dick wasn't there, he was hanging out over in Chincoteague, Va., trying to bring down a duck or two. Wife Bea was land enough to share some words with me about Dick. He retired from his Washington, D.C., law practice five years ago. When not hunting or fishing he is involved in a research project concerning the loss of shellfish in Chincoteague Bay. Willard "Bill" Wyeth, where is he? Lookout Mountain, on the Georgia side. Apparently the other side is in Tennessee, a fact I know you'll appreciate. Bill's been down there since 1970 but I still detected a New Hampshire accent. Bill's actually from New Hampshire though he came to Dartmouth from Mount Vernon, N.Y. He was in the insurance business but is now retired for six years. He spends six weeks in Maine in the summer and this summer hopes to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary at the old family homestead in Andover, N.H. Seems only yesterday we cavorted about Richardson Hall as freshmen. He roomed with Holmes Green. Last I knew Holmes was in Leonard, Tex. Be in touch, Holmes.
Dave Whipple is in Great Falls, Va. Dave was "Our Man in Havana," spending 35 years in the CIA. He's now head of the Retired Intelligence Officers Organization. He is a frequent speaker on television programs. Says he works out every morning. He shared some of his experiences with me. Makes my life seem rather dull. Schedule permitting he hopes to be at the 50th. I found Jack Underhill in Barneveld (north of Utica), N.Y. He spent a good deal of his career with Norwich Mills, but is now retired these past eight years. Not fully retired because he now runs a liquor store. Dr. Oliver Thresher is in West Grove, Pa. "Ollie" retired from his ob-gyn practice last fall, has a home in Ocean City, N.J., right on the beach (or so he hopes after the recent upheaval), and spends his summers there. He'll be at the 50th. Talked with Bob Goldman in Stamford, Conn. Bob had been in the apparel business for many years. Got out of that 15 years ago and went into real estate. Pretty much winding that down. He is active in volunteer work with SCORE and also counsels elderly people at the local hospital. Good for you, Bob, and more so for them. When not doing all that spends some time in Quechee, Vt., in a place he and wife Sue have. Out in the far west is Homer Chaney. He retired from teaching American history at California University at Bakersfield, where he lives. Previous to that he taught at Northwestern, Fresno State, and Stanford. Raised on the West Coast, he was once a surfer but now says his big project is rebuilding his house. Though he can't make the 50th, Homer still thinks Dartmouth is special.
Not too late to make plans for the 50th!
