Greetings my friends. I'm back after a summer hiatus and when this enjoyable season unfortunately is on the wane. I trust yours was the best!
Received a note from Dick Sherwin telling of the loss of his wife of 56 years, Eunice. Dick, having leg problems, has been forced to give up his love for golfCharlie Keyes was to visit him this summer.
Frank Cannell reports in from Colorado Springs answering questions I had asked in my April column. He and his wife, May, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past June. Frank says it all began at our Winter Carnival in 1938. May had to finish Wellesley before they could get married. (The Sherwins also celebrated their 55th on September 7,1995!) Frank and May are respectfully proud of their five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.... "We have the usual physical complaints at age 77 and 80 I have never been bored in the 16 years of retirement!"
The first weekend in May found Bob andClaire Reeve, Henry and CharlotteMcDuff, Gil and Fran Tanis, Bob andMarion Reno, Phyllis Hill, and yours truly enjoying another Class Officers Weekend.... Again I say, the College is in good hands and its future and reputation continue to brighten.
The campus was as green and sparkling as ever—Hanover's Main Street continues dressing up and the Inn has a new and larger lobby expanding into a portion of the outside dining area. News from the weekend; Henry McDuff recovering from an operation for carpal syndrome; the Reeves are finally ensconced in their new Hanover home; Bob Reno told of new brides taken by Harry Beck and Art Soule; and Jake Carey was active in this year's Masters Golf Tournament as chief official on one of the holes.
Bruce Lemmon comments on my income tax comment.... "It reminds me of one I'm told my grandfather, highly respected for his wisdom (and honesty), made in 1913 'This law will make more crooks out of Americans than anything that ever happened!' "
I close with an election quote from Lawrence J. Peter: "Democracy is a process by which people are free to choose the person who will get the blame!"
