As the school year begins, I want to remind all of you to mark the weekend of October 18-20 on your calendar. That is die date of our annual fall minireunion concurrent with Dartmouth Night, the bonfire, and the weekend athletic competition against Yale. The festivities begin with the parade and bonfire on Friday evening and then get really serious at 11:00 on Saturday morning at the class tent which will be located behind Sphinx (BYOB and food). Then at 6:30, a class dinner will be held at the home of Barbara and Dick Couch, 29 Lyme Road in Hanover. If you are planning to attend the dinner, please call them (603) 643-3441 (w) or (603) 643-3146 (h) before October 1. A block of rooms has been reserved at both the Radisson Inn, (603) 298-5906, and the Holiday Inn, (802) 295-3000, and you should call them directly before September 18 to reserve a room.

Last year more than 40 classmates returned to Hanover for the Reunion and this year we are hoping for at least 55 members of the class to be there. Why 55?...Think about it when you blow out your next set of candles. So call your roommate, fraternity brother, or the classmate you got to know after graduation and plan to join us in October. The cost of all this...a $20 donation. Send your check, made out to Class of 1964, to Jim Hughes, 11 Laurel Road, Chestnut Hill, MA 02167.

Before turning to news about our Little Hall classmates, I would like to correct my last column. Contrary to what I reported in June, after 11 years with Liz Claiborne as a corporate senior vice president, JeffShendell is now going through outplacement while he seeks another senior management position with a retailing or wholesaling firm, and would appreciate any assistance from classmates.

I received a large number of responses from those of you who began your lives at Dartmouth 36 years ago as residents of Little Hall, but one of the most timely came from our former class secretary, AlexVarkas (Key Biscayne, Fla.). Alex, who is in his third career as a partner in a commercial litigation law firm, recently lost his prostate gland to the surgeon's knife and has an important message for every member of the class."GET A P.S.A. TEST!"

He was perfectly healthy, playing tennis daily in the Florida sun, when his routine P.S.A. test showed he had a problem which led to the eventual surgery. As he puts it, "I lost my prostate, but. saved my tail!" I have Alex committed to attending the previously mentioned mini reunion and he will be lecturing on the subject at the class tent.

In October I will have lots more news on the first residents of Little Hall. But for now, mark the mini reunion weekend on your calendar, reserve yourself a room, and send Jim Hughes $20. See you in Hanover.
