An exchange I overheard recently between a man and a woman on an uptown subway train: "...Oh, you mean you didn't get my e-mail?"
"No, I wasn't in my office and I didn't boot up my portable."
"Well, I sent you a note and a voice-mail message yesterday."
"Oh really—but I couldn't get into my voice-mail with my cell phone from the road and my beeper transmitted an incorrect phone number; so I didn't grab any of those messages. So what's up?"
"Oh, I just wondered if you were free for dinner tonight?"
Ah, the information age. I know dating was never simple but this is a new level. I have a colleague who no longer has long- distance telephone service from her home. No, it's not a protest statement on her part against the endless phone companies' service solicitations. Rather, it's relief from the $3,000/ month phone bills her 15-year old-daughter racked up communicating with a guy she'd met—on the Internet. Boy, has life gone global!

That's all on the news that made it's way to me. Whatever you've got, pass it along—voice-mail, e-mail, fax-mail—they tell me it all works. As for me, I really do prefer the thrill of opening that mailbox. My address below is new; but the mailman hasn't let me down yet, no matter where I've roamed. Hope to hear from you.
