Tony Knapp, a prolific author of sophisticated numeric subjects, has been awarded the 1997 American Mathematical Society Leroy P. Steele Prize for his book, Representation Theory of Semisimple Groups (An Overview Based on Examples), published by Princeton University Press. The prize committee called it "beautifully written." Tony is math professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Vermont National Bank is now the largest bank in the state following a merger with First Savings of New Hampshire and Vermont Federal Bank, it was announced by Rick Hashagen, president and CEO of Vermont Financial Services Corp., the parent company of Vermont National, which began as the Bank of Brattleboro in 1821.

But watch out, here comes Merrill Lynch onto South Main Street in Hanover led by none other than Launny Steffens, vice chairman of the board. Launny took advantage of his presence at opening ceremonies to meet with President Freedman and make a speech at the Tuck School.

Had Hillary Rodman Clinton and Harold Ickes listened to Mike Cardozo, the White House might have avoided at least one fund-raising embarrassment last year, according to The New York Times. Mike, the director of the Clintons' legal defense fund, warned them that there was something fishy about the contributions that Yah Lin (Charlie) Trie had offered the fund.

Doe a deer, a female deer. Eighty-nine cadets from Theresianum Military Academy near Vienna came to Johannes von Trapp's Trapp Family Lodge, a Stowe ski resort, to honor their class patron Baron Georg von Trapp, the family patriarch who fled the Nazis in Austria and opened the resort in 1942. Johannes is the youngest of six surviving children of the famous musical act popularized in The Sound of Music.

One of our great entertainers, Paul Binder, director and ringmaster of the Big Apple Circus, has agreed to be the master of ceremonies at our 35th Reunion class dinner in June. He'll follow another great name, Bill King, a Dartmouth Trustee who will speak to the class earlier that week. The Reunion, June 15-18, promises to be a spectacular mix of outings, intellectual and topical programs, plenty of sports, and great entertainment. Tom Perry (attendance), Steve Swirsky (academic programs), Sam Cabot (sports), Steve Lewinstein (entertainment), and Dave Goodwillie (memorial service) are the latest committee members to come aboard.

Dick Friedman, Boston developer and friend of President Clinton, has tied the knot with Nancy Klemm, a Boston photographer. The Clintons spent three weeks at Dick's Martha's Vineyard farm as they have done in previous summers. Bruce Coggeshall, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is the new class representative to the Alumni Council which serves in a powerful advisory capacity to the board of Trustees. A lawyer in Portland, Bruce has been a member of the class executive committee and frequently attends reunions and games. He succeeds Dave Schaefer, who is class newsletter editor. Led by head agent Bruce Baggaley and committee members John Kubacki and Tom Perry, our class broke the "class 34 years out Alumni Fund record" by raising $280,000, compared with $255,617 raised by the class of '53. It was also the second year in a row we won the Green Derby fund-raising competition.
