The past fall we lost three members of our class. BillSchwingel died on September 14, Joe Hoover passed away in his sleep on October 15, and we received word from son Ned '68 that his dad, Ed Cummings, died on October 22. Obits appear in a following issue.

Unless you turn immediately to your Class Notes before reading anything else in this magazine, you have probably noted that this issue is celebrating the 25th anniversary of coeducation at Dartmouth. As such, it was suggested by our editors that class columns might highlight the accomplishments of wives, daughters, and, I suppose if one wanted to be completely up-to-date, "significant others." We are aware that there are some among our number who have not yet found peace of mind since women were admitted to the hallowed halls of Hanover. On the other hand, we recall an opinion from the late George Boswell, who was never one to mince words. As a teacher at Dartmouth, George was emphatic in his opinion that the introduction of the fairer sex made the classroom atmosphere not only more congenial, but considerably more productive.

We would hazard a guess that even the most opinionated male chauvinist amongst us would be more than willing to acknowledge the extraordinary attributes of the fairer sex, as lovers, mothers, helpmates, cooks, companions, friends, house-managers, or what have you, and we hasten to add that we have not listed the above in any order of importance. As such we apologize for not filling this column with some of the accomplishments of the ladies who have shared their lives with '39ers. But in truth, we have considerably difficulty reporting on classmates, who rarely send news of accomplishments to either Newsletter Editor Cardozo, or to this corner, so how could we be expected to chronicle their companions?

There are exceptions, of course, and that would be Betsy Wyman Emmons and Evie Kaiser. Despite the fact that we welcome all widows into the 1939 family, Betsy is the lone duly elected female classmate, a member of the executive committee, co-chair of the bequest committee, and the one who keeps in touch with the class widows. Ev has been the class hostess forever, putting up with the annual picnic at her digs, and from her vantage point in Hanover, helping the members of the '39 community who need her advice or assistance.
