Last month you read in this column about a few women in our class who are distinguishing themselves in a variety of ways. Well, just after the deadline for that column passed, the news broke that one '87 woman above all has hit the big time. As you probably know from reading the Enquirer while waiting in the checkout line (don't deny it—I know you do), our own Debbie Rowe has married Michael Jackson and is the mother of his child. A CNN report in November confirmed: "Singer Michael Jackson is expecting a child early next year with long-time friend Debbie Rowe."
The gloved one himself said, "Please respect my privacy and that of Debbie and the child...this is my dream come true."
Your faithful columnist immediately began clipping news stories about this remarkable development in order to bring you the inside story.
Then an e-mail came from the proud mama herself: "I guess I married Michael and the baby is due in February. In Time Magazine, a short article (with photo) indicated that I had not received any money. Unfortunately, The Star reported that Michael ditched me hours after the ceremony and I spent my wedding night alone and in tears."
Enrique Salem has been getting a little publicity of his own. He is chief technology officer for Symantec Corp., the maker of Norton Utilities and other handy software products. Enrique was interviewed in the August 28 issue of Investor's Business Daily about how the Internet has impacted his company's products and services.
I also received an update on Jane Ho, who has recently relocated from Minnesota to Maine with her husband. She has completed her residency in pediatrics and joined Central Maine Clinical Associates- Pediatrics and the staff of the Central Maine Medical Center. In other medical news, Neil Schiff has joined the ear, nose, and throat practice of Neil M. Lindenman, M.D., in Waterbury and Southbury, Conn. Neil specializes in sinus and nasal disease, allergy, and cancer of the head and neck. He also has special training in advanced endoscopic and laser technologies. Nothing personal, Neil, but I hope none of us ever needs to pay a visit to your office.
George Balchunas wrote to announce the birth of his second daughter, Anna Cosima. George and his wife, Cindy, and daughter Rebecca welcomed the new addition to their family on October 4. George is an attorney for Penske Truck Leasing in Reading, Pa., where he drafts logistics contracts.
He also reports that Scott Mudd has finished a five-year tour of duty as manager of an English teaching program in Japan and is now a scuba diving instructor in Saipan, Micronesia.
Finally, our own Chris Marquardt was nominated for a Washington Area Music Association "Wammie" Award for Best Male Vocalist in the alternative rock category. Unfortunately, he lost out to some nobody named Dave Matthews. Better luck next year, Chris! Catch him at one of his many gigs in the D.C. area under his stage name, Chris Alastair.
