Graduation was ten years ago hard to believe, isn't it? What are your memories of that June day? Do you remember who the commencement speaker was? Who our valedictorian was? Which faculty member we honored with the Distinguished Teaching Award at Class Day? Answers at the end of this column.
John McCright wrote to announce his marriage to Sarah Pope, which took place last September near the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont. Dartmouth folks on hand to celebrate included Mike Roy, Frank Powers '86, Bob Kempainen '88, Andrew Paulsen '88, Mike Fadil '85, and Tim Clark '88. The weather cooperated completely and the only snafu was that some local sheep escaped from their pen and circulated among the guests at the outdoor reception. John and Sarah live in Cambridge, where he is an editor at Video Guide, an interactive television news service.
Scott Sandford and his wife, Kendra, have moved from Toronto to London, where Scott is pursuing work as a cameraman for films, commercials, and music videos. He had lots of news to share about fellow classmates: "Ross Jones and wife Emily '90 are expecting their first child in March (must have been some reunion weekend!) and are living in Boston. Werner Morawitz has a Ph.D. in oceanography and is studying the world's oceans in Tasmania with his wife, Laura. He has spent the last seven years on field trips from the Arctic to Everest. Last I spoke to Julian Okwu, he was living in San Francisco and writing a photo-based book profiling young African-American role models. Kate Brew Colin has just moved back to San Francisco with her husband, Jeff, and their daughter, Jessie."
Doubleday has recently published a new book titled You've Only Got Three Seconds (How to Make the Right Impression in Business and Social Life), co-authored by classmate Stephanie Losee. Stevie works partime as a contributing writer for Fortune and a money columnist for the Web site Women's Wire . The rest of the time she cares for two-year-old daughter Olivia and trains for marathons. An injury kept her out of the New York Marathon this year, but she planned to run the Vermont City Marathon this May. Stevie and her husband, Tom Unger, recently bought an apartment on the Upper East Side in New York, and their daughter has become good friends with Jasper Bingham, son of fellow '87 George Bingham.
Perhaps Liza Ryan didn't plan to tell us herself, but her new father-in-law, Quentin Kopp '49, wrote in to report that Liza was married last August to Shep Kopp '86. The newlyweds live in Venice, Calif., where Liza is a photography instructor at Cerritos Junior College and Fullerton State University. She also occasionally exhibits her own photographic art. Shep is a deputy public defender for the County of Los Angeles. Sharon Grayzel Dodson checked in from Portland, Ore., where she is a veterinarian. She married Jeff Dodson last summer, and wedding guests included Melissa Duarte Phillips, Stacey Wolff, Anne Kubik, Mike Krupka, Kacky Corcoran, Sarah Donahue, and Barbara Stradling. Sharon and Jeff have recently bought an old house, which has kept them busy. The March 3 edition of The Dartmouth included on its front page the first article in a six-part series on alcohol at Dartmouth. The archival photograph accompanying the story was of none other than Jeff Good and Kurt Schneider, each guzzling a fall beer. I guess we are now the poster children for the "good old days" at Dartmouth.
Now the answers to the quiz: Senator Bill Bradley, Mark Henrie, and chemistry professor Charles Braun. How did you do?
