An unusually toasty July night here on the Upper West Side of New York. And I am with out air conditioning. Yes, I'm aware that exposure to extreme heat at my age constitutes some kind of health risk. But it's not like I'm having sex or anything. I'm just sitting in front of the ball game, writing about you fine people. I'm not kidding. We have fine people in our class.
Tom Kiernan is one of them. He's president of the National Parks and Conservation Association. Before that he was president of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire, and before that he was at the EPA. There's a theme here. Yes, you guessed it. He's the only Stanford M.B.A. ever to work nonprofit. Also serving his community is Doug Schwarz. He's a partner at a Boston law firm Peckham, Lobel, at al., and he was appointed to serve as commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. Doug is a Harvard Law School type, what ever that means. Actually, he's probably not a Harvard Law School type.
Also responding to a higher calling is John J. Connolly Jr. That's Father John J. Connolly Jr. Father Connolly got the Big Call and was ordained in 1994. His first assignment was at St. Mark's in Dorchester, Mass., where he served as a parochial vicar for three years. Last year he assumed the secretarial post to Cardinal Law in Boston. The last time I saw him was many years ago in the basement of Kappa Sig. You cannot fully serve God if you don't occasionally mix with the parishioners.
There are, of course, many others in our class who find time to give of themselves in ways large and small. I know this personally. I wrote last time of my father's death, and many of you wrote back. Your kind words made me smile. Thank you.
