Fearing that I may be turning irrevocably into an Anglophile, I decided recently that it was time to make a brief visit home. I am happy to report that my transatlantic travels, which included time in Boston and Hanover, also crossed paths with several of our classmates, many of whom were just returning from cross-country or global treks of their Own....
Among those present in Hanover for Leadership Weekend were our illustrious president Tom Caputo who—in charac-teristic fashion—was keeping himself busy juggling not only his presidential duties, but also the logistics of a Boston job change, from CDI to the consulting firm, Capital One. Vice president Brendan Doherty also came up—from D.C.—where he is beginning his second year as a private school teacher, as did Jack Kolodny from Boston, having recently returned from a vacation in Iceland (ice fishing, anyone?) Shelley Arakawa while still at home in Hanover, had plenty of her own jet-setting stories to tell regarding her admissions work in search of next year's Dartmouth class. And finally, also up from Boston were Adam Medros still employed at the Parthenon Group, and Yeng Felipe, who has just settled in the city after a transfer from New York City.
Because her job often takes her on the road, Yeng took a moment to fill me in on several people she has caught up with in recent months. During a trip to San Francisco, she cruised the Bay Area's highways ways with Cindy Weigle, who is Fundraising for the Phillips Brooks School, and Anita Mannan who is scheduled to join the Peace Corps in West Africa early next year, and also bumped into Kelsey Grimm, who just moved to Palo Alto from Baltimore and is now working at a venture capital firm. On the East Coast, she and Maribel Bastian still with the Museum of Modern Art's education department in New York, headed to Rhode Island for a weekend with the notorious Newport crew of J.R. Tomkinson Joe Parlavecchio,Mike Gordon, Mike Jakola, EnriqueColbert, and Chris Cho. J.R., having finished a four-month sabbatical in Europe and North Africa, where he camel-trekked across the Sahara, was on his way to San Francisco to work at SCORE (a Kaplan tutoring program), along with Mike Gordon, who is now based at SCORE's L.A. branch.
Also among the notes from Yeng's travel diary: Barry Shea is keeping busy with rotations in Wellesley as he enters his third year at Tufts Medical School. Barry also recently returned from a two-week trip visiting Kia Morley, who is in Zambia with the Peace Corps doing environmental education And Larisa Layug has left Boston and moved to Washington, D.C., after a brief vacation in Paris, of course....
As for Yeng herself? Now settled into Asset Management with Merrill Lynch, she reports that while she misses New York, the Boston move has been greathome by 6 p.m. and weekends free. Moreover, plenty of Dartmouth comrades live nearby; her apartment building (appropriately located on Dartmouth Street) is also home to Vil Ramos '95, and while at Vil's birthday party a few weeks ago, she bumped into fellow classmates Janny Bae and Jun Tsutsumi.
I have many more highlights to share, but, unfortunately, I am out of room. Look for more soon! In the meantime, don't forget get to catch up with fellow classmates at upcoming mini-reunions—in particular, at the time of this writing, our class officers were busy planning an event early next year at the Athenaeum in Boston, featuring Dartmouth Professor Kang speaking on the Asian financial crisis. If you're in the area, please drop in!
