I, Gary Brooks, am filling in for regular secretary John Chittick, who is in Asia (physically, and maybe also metaphysically!). He had all the raw material for the column, but simply ran out of time before he had to leave.

Terry Shumaker's nomination by President Clinton to be ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was confirmed by the United States Senate recently. Terry, a Concord, N.H. lawyer, chaired the President's 1992 and 1996 New, Hampshire election campaigns. Trinidad and Tobago is a former British Colony with a population of about 1.3 million people. I'm guessing Terry will not be missing the New Hampshire winters he is leaving behind.

Word comes from Chicago that Dave Ulrich has been appointed acting regional administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Region 5. Dave has been with the EPA in varying capacities since graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law in 1973, with a special emphasis in environmental law.

Dale Lally was honored by Princeton University at its commencement this past June with one of its 1997 Distinguished Teacher Awards. Dale has been teaching drama and English for the past five years at Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

Jim Nachtwey has just been featured in U.S. News & World Report commenting on his work as a photojournalist. He also had an exhibit titled "Ground Level: Photographs by James Nachtwey" running through November 26 at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, which also presented him with an honorary doctorate.

I just had a very enjoyable visit with Tack Burbank, who was in the Hanover area mediating a lawsuit. He is enjoying his change of profession from commercial litigator to mediator and has developed a busy practice all around New England. Tack and his wife, Christine, live in Pittsfield, Mass. Christine works in a county mental health agency and has also developed a growing private practice as psychotherapist. Their daughter Liza is a student at the University of Massachusetts with a promising career as a writer, and their daughter Maggie is finishing this year at Northfield-Mount Herman, where her acting and playwriting ability have been honored.

In his recent class newsletter Tommy Quinn reported the sad news of the passing of several of our classmates. I wanted to add a word about Tommy Baer, who died August 23 after a nine-month battle with cancer. Tommy's devotion to his community and Congregation Shir hadash, which he helped found, were evidenced by the more than 500 people who attended his memorial service. Tommy was principal of Mountain View High School in Los Gatos, and was involved in numerous community service activities during all his life. At the service the rabbi noted: "Tom's enthusiasm was genuine and good, and Tom's unbounded energy motivated others and made them feel good." Tommy is survived by Cynthia, his wife of 30 years, and his daughters Rachel and Emily.
