Mini-reunion arrangements for the weekend of September 17 19 have been made and promulgated by the old master planner in the faraway hills, Vic Schneider. Rooms are available at Comfort Inn; Friday dinner will be at Murphy's Farm in Quechee, and Saturday dinner will be at Alden Inn in Lyme. The Penn game, which may decide the Ivy League championship, will begin at noon, so the pre-game gathering at Chip Deming's place in Hanover will be a 10:30 brunch.
The Schneiders have been busy in other ways supervising the construction of a new house in Quechee, finally moving their belongings from storage in May, including 100 cartons of books, and starting landscaping. Vic and Bobbie have the same mailing address: P.O. Box 436, Quechee, VT 05059, but they live at 35 Fox Lane.
Jane and Don Hanks are back on the farm in Salem, N.Y., for R&R after a tough time with Don's chemotherapy in Fort Myers this spring. Their spirits are good, enhanced by happy family activities such as their twin sons' 50th birthday, marriage of a grandson, and college graduation of a granddaughter. Keep on truckin', folks.
Another upbeat report came from Joe Guidrey in Fort Myers, Fla. After losing a leg to a circulation problem last year, he's getting around with a walker and hopes to progress to a cane. Way to go, Joe.
A note (in June) from George Thompson in Peterborough, N.H., bemoaned the cold and wet weather that was delaying his garden work. He also relayed the sad news of Hal Newell's passing in the Washington area. They had been roomies or neighbors down on West Wheelock Street.
Bill Reeder in Midland, Texas, is keeping busy with his real-estate interests. He owns a shopping center and self-storage units down there in West Texas, where he and Sally have lived since the forties. They've had two sets of twins plus a son 77, who lives in Meriden, Conn., and gives them a chance to return regularly to New England.
A reliable source has revealed to me that the well-known foreign correspondent George Herman and his wife Patty are heading for China in September. They will be visiting the Yangtze Gorge, Xian, where the terra cotta statues are buried and, of course, the Great Wall. Just watch your selves at T. Square, and don't give any interviews about human rights.
Talked to Dick Otter, the professor emeritus at Notre Dame. He's still short of crew assistance on his larger sailboat, but enjoys solo lake sailing on his little Sunfish. And get this, Dick continues to play ice hockey twice a week from September through March.
Another man who knows how to enjoy life is George Simpson. He and his lady friend Dee West threw a big party on June 14 in Asheville, N.C., for George's 80th birthday. Glad to hear that Dr. George was overcoming his recent health problems. Hang in there, all of you '41s!
