June—September, 1954: Many were busy getting married. The DAM reported: Luke Case and Ann Hargett; Jack Godfrey and Jean Haskell Smith; Dave Mandelbaum and Rosemary Yokell; Clark Murphy and Carol Joan Porter; Paul Dalton and Janet Forrest; Dick Eaton and Nancy Lee Carter; Cliff Evans and Mary-Anne Treene; Bruce McAllister and Judith Adams; and Bob Adnopoz and lean Alderman. Forty-four years: Wow!
Engagements were also announced: Pete Liebman to Cynthia Black; Dick Perkins to Rachel Quinby; Dick Barker to Barbara Cree; Pete Ankeny to Margaret Dayton; and Dave McLaughlin to Judith Ann Landauer.
Pete Liebman was honored by The New Philharmonic of New Jersey at its 20th anniversary, upon his retirement after serving for seven years as the president of the orchestra. During his tenure the organization, under his leadership, sustained tremendous growth. As was said, "One person can make an enormous difference." The class of '54 was represented by Art Geller and your correspondent.
Bob McCartney was profiled earlier this year in The McLean (Va.) Weekly. Bob is a senior communications specialist for ARTEL Inc., providing service for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He retired as a U.S. Air Force colonel after 28 years of service. Bob is active in the Boy Scouts of America Organization and Dadlians (a pilot organization that raises money for college scholarships).
Our senior athletes continue to compete. Dalt Dulac competed in the Masters World Cup Cross-County Championship in Lake Placid, N.Y. He finished 17th in his age group in the 20-kilometer classic race but was first among the U.S. entrants winning a national gold medal. In the 10-kilometer classic event he was 15 th overall and won a silver medal in the national competition. He also finished second among U.S. entrants in a 30-kilometer event.
Thanks to e-mail, heard from Rich McLean (). Rich transferred to U.C. Berkeley in his junior year to focus on studies in math and physics. He retired in 1993 from the University of California (Los Alamos and Livermore), where he worked as a computational physicist on nuclear weapons programs. After retirement he worked as a contractor on projects for the Defense Special Weapons Agency, completely retiring in 1997. He and Robin have been married for 43 years. They have now settled in northern New Mexico.
Also received e-mail from Jim Colby (), who is still teaching in London but may now face compulsory retirement. If any of you spend time in London, you are entitled to receive an "elderly person's freedom pass," which gives free travel on public transport anywhere in Greater London.
I would be remiss (plus get crossed off John Gillespie's friendly list) if I did not alert the class to our 40th Reunion plans for next spring. It starts on Monday, June 14, with a lobster bake and ends on Thursday, June 17, with a farewell breakfast. For the hardy (and young in spirit), you can climb Moosilauke on Sunday, June 13. More information to follow. Make plans to attend now.
