The '71 mini-reunion held April 27 in New York brought 22 of us together at the usual place, Rene Pujol on West 51st. The list includes: John Colangelo, Bob Cordy, Dave Dietz, Greg Fell, Tony Fitzpatrick, Mike Furey, Mike Hannigan, Tom Jackson, Bill Kennedy, Jeff Kosak, Michael Maynard, Jeff McElnea, Tom McGuane, Don O'Neill, Bob Osborne, Bob Peters, Pete Ruegger, John Shanahan, Pete Webster, Scott Wiley, Dick Wooster, and Steve Zrike. As usual, a great evening was had by all.
Barry Brink is moving to State College, Penn., where he will be working in a group psychology practice with Peter Montminy '81. Barry writes: "I went by Jim Wallace's to let him know, and was surprised to see a 'For Sale' sign in his yard. It turned out that Jim was relocating to Charlotte. Despite the move north, I'm planning on making an annual trip down to Myrtle Beach in the winter and giving Joe Jarrett a progress report on my golf swing. Joe will be happy to know that I have almost stopped throwing golf clubs when the ball is uncooperative. However, I am nowhere near my personal distance record, set by throwing a tennis racquet over a fence and across the widths of three courts against Navy during our junior year!"
Curt Welling was expected to be named president of SG Cowen Securities Corp. upon its acquisition by Societe Generale (where he is an investment banker). Cowen was one of the last remaining independent investment banks specializing in technology industries. Tim Nelson has moved to John G. Kinnard & Co. as a senior analyst. Previously he has held numerous positions in the medical technology field. At Kinnard he will be focusing on cardiovascular technology companies. Jim Smith, as head of Connecticut's Webster Bank, added another local competitor, Eagle Bank, to his lengthening list of takeover targets and completed the merger in May (with the unintended result that I now send my mortgage payments to him!). And Mitchel Wallerstein has been named vice president for the program on global security and sustainability of the John D. and Catherine T. Mac Arthur Foundation. Mitch is also teaching at both the National Defense University and Johns Hopkins.
Sadly, this spring brought news of three more classmate deaths. Anthony Harley of Springfield, Ill., died April 8 in Birmingham, after being caught in a tornado. Peter Miele passed away in Naples, Fla., in early May. He lost a valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sara "Judy" Miele. John Warren died suddenly of a heart attack on April 21. He is survived by his wife, Robin, and their daughter Becky (a sophomore at Wellesley who will attend Dartmouth on the exchange program this fall). Robin and Greg Nielsten are establishing a permanent scholarship in John's name at the Thayer School. (Contributions should be sent care of Scott Muirhead, Thayer School of Engineering, Hanover, NH 03755-8000.)
Peace be with you.
