We had our first snow in Hanover on Nov. 17, and our winter was then definitely on the way. At the same time Dartmouth announced the appointment of a new provost, Susan Westerberg Prager, and a new dean of the College, James Larimore, coming here from UCLA and Stanford.
Recently we had a pleasant phone visit with Nat Barrows, who is now living in Maine near two of his three daughters. His address: 12A Highland Ave., South Berwick, ME 03908. In spite of poor eyesight he enjoys his TV. He recalled when he was first at Dartmouth, President Hopkins, a D '01 classmate of his father, called him to his office and told him, "You have a good motor, but it needs more gas—or else!" Nat saw to it that his grades improved!
in an earlier column we mentioned the death of Ted Baehr (also known by the stage name Robert Allen). Those who read The New York Times probably saw his obituary. We were interested to read that his inability to play the guitar (to compete with singing cowboy Gene Autrey) led to his replacement in that type of movie "by a young man from Ohio named Roy Rogers." Rip has a new word processor with an instruction book of 400-plus pages. When he has read it all through and is all set up, ready to go, maybe he will teach me how!
He adds his verse: "We plague ourselves, I wonder why, With magnified minutiae, Instead of seeking, as we should, For whatsoever things are good. Love, truth, and beauty will abide And never need be magnified."
