Here's another in our series of lifestyle accounts of '45s residing outside the U.S.A. Jim Wilson responded from Ludlow, NB, Canada. Jim has had a distinguished career as a pianist, harpsichordist, and teacher, having toured widely in the United States, Canada, and Europe. I'm going to let him tell his retirement story.
"I inherited property on the S. W. Miramichi River, the world-famous fishing stream. And Ido not fish!...l designed my retirement home with music in mind. Only three rooms, but the "big room" is the size of a small recital hall, and here repose my Steinway grand, my harpsichord, and a large organ. My home is built on a high bluff overlooking the valley. I have no neighbors—only rabbits, deer, etc. Therefore, I feel free to make one helluva racket any time I get the urge...
"I built this place in '73 and came here in the summers to prepare my lectures and concert programs for the coming year. In 1980 I moved here permanently. Former students and other musicians from the United States and Europe visit quite frequently. I now give only the occasional benefit concert. I turn out organ transcriptions with the speed of a pizza baker—and with about the same depth. A few organists in the United States and Canada have copies and use some of the stuff.
"During winter months I frequently travel on freighters, and there are few places on the globe that I have not visited. No cruise ships for this guy."
met at a Mormon dance in Danville, Calif. And here is a shocker for you: on our second dance, because she was such a stunningly beautiful woman, I asked for her hand in marriage. And she said yes!" Fred says little about their year in Peru, apparently concentrating on learning Spanish and continuing his specialty of speed-reading in English.
