The balmy Hawaiian winds and lack of any concentrated effort compel your faithful scribe to apologetically deviate from our prescribed dorm-by-dorm approach. Perhaps you have already heard that our own Peter Fitzgerald was elected U.S. senator from Illinois, the only Republican senatorial challenger in the country to unseat an incumbent Democrat. The first Republican in Illinois to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 20 years, Peter will be the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. Well, I suppose it's a long way from '82 class council and Summer Carnival committee to the hallowed halls of Congress (or maybe not, as Peter has effectively demonstrated). Regardless of your political views, you've got to admit it's pretty exciting to have a senator from our ranks. Peter is a former Illinois state senator. He lives in Inverness, Ill., with wife Nina and six-year-old son Jake.

From Bob "Robert E." Lee: "I'm trying to figure out how to collect on a prize I won. While talking to Jean-Baptiste Burack at the class picnic, he informed me that I took the prize for the most kids in the class (seven from one marriage). How do I collect my all-expenses-paid weekend at the Hanover Inn?" Bob, I'm afraid you'll be needing more help than that!

From Glenn Grube: "Twenty years ago I was lucky to be randomly matched with Nash Ogden, with whom I shared interests in motorcycles and jazz. I must admit, however, that when I received a letter in August 1978 from Frederick Nash Ogden III, who proudly described his "real-to-real" tape deck, I wondered what I was getting into. The biggest joke of all was that I actually signed up for the River Cluster!"

Winky Stearns Hussey writes, "I live in Seattle with kids Luke, Duncan, and Clarkie and husband Peter '83. I do recycling work, school volunteering, teach a parenting class once a week, and go to grad school at night. Still running half-marathons when time and stress fractures allow. Erik Hamerschlag lives in Dolores, Colo., and is CEO of Osprey Packs. He is building his own solar home and has a new dog, Java. MarieCenter died a year ago this August after a three-year battle with cancer and is sorely missed."

My own meandering recently featured an encounter with Eric Einhorn, who is practicing law with a large Seattle firm and is a hardcore weekend outdoorsman. At his 20th high school reunion Eric was voted "most changed." I'm not so sure about that one! Salt Lake City is home of the infamous lanCampbell, who masquerades as manager of a fancy restaurant and connoisseur of fine wines. Wife Beth, a former national telemark champion, and son Duncan, 3, round out the Campbell clan. Paternity has been tough on lan, though; "ski days are down from about 50 to only 25." I also recently crossed paths with fellow chronic bachelorrenegade Pete Saltzman. The first time, he was in a large truck supervising something official-looking. The second time, he was driving around with a windsurfer and wearing a big grin. Hmm...

Susan Burkhardt was recently honored by the YMCA of San Francisco with its Volunteer of the Year Award for her outstanding work at the Presidio Community branch.

Bob Bauer and wife Sally fulfilled a longtime dream and escaped the suburban rat race for the joys of rural Vermont. Bob is running his own business writing and editing financial reports. The cedar hot tub is next to the pond. Elder son Benjamin, 6, has recurring nightmares that the Red Sox just keep on losing. Will the Bruins be next?? Mais oui.

If you don't want to read about yourself secondhand, please write! And check out our class website at Gotta go—the sound of the surf is making it difficult to concentrate. Come visit Kauai! Pope Ted lives!
