Merle Weiner and I met my first day in Hanover, and we have been friends ever since. So imagine my surprise when I sent an e-mail to lowa and the reply came from Oregon! So much for staying in touch.. .Anyway, Merle reports that she is now an assistant professor at the University of Oregon School of Law and husband Tom is with the U.S. Attorney's office. Merle, Tom, and Eli (2) love the calmer pace of Eugene—as a suburbanite with cows in my back yard, I completely relate.
Emily Arons and hubbie Rick live in Seattle. Emily is vice president of consumer products at Wizards of the Coast, which produces Magic and Dungeons and Dragons. She is responsible for worldwide publishing and licensing. Although I'll confess to never really understanding Dungeons and Dragons, I know enough to say that Emily has a really cool job.
From Munich, Germany, Hank Aldrich writes that he survived Oktoberfest and it was a good time for all. He has left the toy industry and is looking for new challenges, maybe even back in the United States. By the time you read this column, Hank will have begun his biggest and most rewarding challenge by marrying his girlfriend of three years. The nuptials are set for Florida—I hope someone will send the details for a later column. Congratulations and good luck to Hank!
Way back in May, Suzanne Powers filled me in on her latest success, namely Jarrod Thomas Sinibaldi (born January 17, 1998). By now I'm sure that Suzanne and husband Tom Sinibaldi have survived colic, solid foods, the first teeth, and that Jarrod is walking up a storm. It's embarrassing to be late in reporting good news, but the editorial schedule and my bad memory are to blame. As of May Suzanne had gone back to work part-time as a speech-language pathologist (job sharing) with adult stroke patients. Tom is a computer consultant while pursuing a career as an opera singer. Wow! From their life in Long Island, Suzanne and Tom reported sightings of Ann Filliault, Joel Thayer, Jay Berkow,Lonnie Staley, and Carole CrelinFrassinelli.
More overdue news (my fault): Marianne Kamp received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago last June (on women in Uzbekistan in the 19205). She now teaches history of the Islamic world at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., and reports that her students are wonderful, intelligent, and dedicated. I wonder if any of my Dartmouth professors would have said that about me? Nah! Marianne and husband Michael Brose love Walla Walla and take advantage of wonderful cycling, hiking, and skiing.
I visited Hanover in September, and as I sat and rocked on the porch of the Hanover Inn, I couldn't help but thank the powers above for the chance to experience such a wonderful place. Fewer banks, more construction, and 'shmen doing the Salty DogRag—the more things change the more they stay the same. Don't forget to e-mail!
