Jon and Debbie Osgood are parents of a baby boy, Christopher, born last September. It would appear that Jon now holds the record for the classmate with the youngest offspring (class of 2020!). And Colby Morgan "finished the Memphis Marathon, my first. It was a war, and my time was ugly. But there is hope for middle-aged Big Greeners."
Wolfgang Pfahler, who teaches in Vreden, Germany, has "a new headmaster who is all for change, and that is the current slogan. The new media are supposed to do the trick, but how do you stay on the Internet when the funds are limited and the average age of your colleagues is 52? The three Rs are the backbone of education, and most of the reform claptrap ignores what is really important. Some alumni formed a Berlin alumni club—too bad I live 6 1/2 hours away. Going to Berlin is an experience as you constantly encounter road construction from the Dutch to the Polish border. Later this year the vans will shuttle across the country and move most government ministries to Berlin. The end of an era: the Bonner Republic will be followed by the Berliner Republic."
Hank Ricklefs writes that "Susie and I have lived in Whitefish, Mont., for about 2 1/2 years, enjoying our location at the foot of Big Mountain ski area, 20 minutes from Glacier National Park. We've got a house big enough for a tennis team and love to share it with visitors from afar. Am enjoying my work in the forest products industry, currently as lumber general manager for Plum Creek Timber. While originally a Northwest company, we have just recently concluded purchase of 900,000 acres in west-central Maine. I hope I can get back there on occasion and renew contact with the College and classmates."
Steve Zrike is "going to impose his talents on a new employer. I have just accepted the position of vice president—business development with J. Baker Inc. in Canton, Mass., a leading specialty retailer of apparel and footwear (Casual Male Big & Tall chain, among others). So now I am in 'the rag trade'! Steve Jr. graduated from Dartmouth last June and now teaches fifth grade in Andover, Mass. Daughter Sara is a Dartmouth senior who recently had lunch with newly installed President James Wright. I understand that she gave him her thoughts on how he should run the College. Third child Andy has broken the family tradition and will soon complete his first term at Middlebury."
Mark Totman writes: "Skiing has been a major part of my life, and I have been able to share that joy with others over the past eight years by teaching skiing to beginners at a very small, family-oriented area in N.H. I've thought how wonderful it would be if I could bring that same experience to kids from Boston, who only know snow as a nuisance. I once heard that Les Otten, the president of the American Skiing Cos. (Sunday River), considered buying Blue Hills (near Route 128) and offering free skiing and snowboarding just to get more people interested in winter sports. I'd bet there's an abundance of skiing and snowboarding equipment that gets returned to manufacturers each year and a similar amount of winter clothing that could be made available for this type of program." Mark would like to hear from others in the Boston area who might be interested in helping move his idea from dream to reality ().
