"Hello, Mr. Ed Grady."
"That's me."
"Fine, I'll be your guide for awhile."
"Good morning."
"We say good eon, up here. I see you are glancing around a bit. Please don't be anxious."
"Who's anxious? I'm just looking for some friends of mine a few good men."
"Will they be here?"
"We have a song a hymn, which says they're on this scene, on guard for us. I know they're here."
"Oh yes, now I know: a few good men, on heaven's scene. They are here, this is the place. Welcome, Ed Grady!"
And by this light banter, the friends and classmates of our column writer, our newsletter writer, Ed Grady, now know that Ed left our world on May 20, 1999, after a brief hospital stay. He leaves Mary, his wife of 49 years, whom many of us know and admire, and their daughter Siobhan, a travel agent, who resided with them, a pretty and gracious person. Mary and Siobhan brought together relatives, the many friends including classmates, in sorrow and in celebration of a life that touched so many classmates and Dartmouth friends. There was a proud marine presence during the wake Monday evening and the Tuesday, May 24, funeral of High Mass, a lovely service. Frank Weber and Ham Chase were' active pallbearers. Class president Andy (and Joan) McCulloch attended.
A full obituary is elsewhere in this issue. Ed had prepared ahead for fall columns, but we decided to honor Ed in this column, and not miss a deadline. He and Mary have enjoyed our fall mini-reunions for decades, and would carry on as below.
The fall mini-reunion will soon be upon us, so mark this date on your calendar and join us. It is Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. Place: Norwich Inn, Norwich, Vt. Phone (802) 649-1143. Events start Friday, Oct. 22, with supper from 5 p.m. and conclude after breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 24. Call the Norwich Inn for reservations. Call promptly so they will hold the room. Dartmouth plays Cornell in football, and many other sports events are scheduled. Plus our parade, and the Saturday night banquet.
We are uncertain of newsletter mailings ahead of that date, so please take your own steps to place the reservation and purchase game tickets as desired. The friendships and facilities will be great, as ever, and the cost moderate. Come. If questions, call JoeHayes (603) 964-6503.
