As this issue of the DartmouthAlumni Magazine arrives you should have already set the GPS in the family truckster to 44 degrees north, 72 degrees west. Destination: The Shaker Inn, Enfield, New Hampshire, and the class of 1962 mini-reunion! Pat and Gordy McKean have been working hard these past months to see that all is in order and our return to Dartmouth will be historic, automotive and pleasant. (My two-month weather forecast guru advises that we are now heading into a glorious crisp North Country weekend.) Speaking of gracious hosts, I want to add that in the last column I failed to thank another terrific London host, John Knight, for his contribution to last summers smashing London visit.
Dick Zartler wrote recently, reflecting on re-
tirement: "The rules I use in deciding what to do have evolved into three simple ones: be productive, keep on learning and do the things you really want to do." (So far, so good, Dick.) He continues: "(a) volunteering as a naturalist at our local school's outdoor learning center, (b) spending quality time with our five grandkids, (c) working with an engineering firm in California, (d) playing tennis with two regular groups, and (e) serving as the gardener and the yard crew for our property in Parker, Texas...." (Your editor enviously observes that this guy really has gotten his stuff together!)
Kent Hutchinson writes: Joan and I are living in Pebble Beach, California, while I "geobatch" three to four nights a week in San Jose—couldn't resist one more CEO opportunity although I envy classmates who have retired. Not sure we are permanent 'Left Coasters' but while we are we would enjoy hearing from fellow '62s." Kent seems serious about thathe included the details: 3120 Spruance Road; Pebble Beach, CA 93953; (831) 624-6882 (phone); (831) 624-6819 (fax).
Kent also mentions an upcoming visit from his son Craig, an F-14 Navy aviator, and daughter-in-law Karen. I love the word Kent coined: "geo-batch." I guess it means that Condor Systems Inc. in San Jose is a far piece from Pebble Beach. If you want to "e-commute" with Kent, just click on over to kenth@condorsys. com. And set your GPS for 38 degrees north, 121.5 degrees west.
Dan Tompkins writes about Dean Spiliotes, the most recent recipient of the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship. Dean wrote to Dan saying in part: "I was thrilled to learn last winter that I would be the recipient for 2000-2001. The awards recognition of both teaching and research really captures the spirit of being a faculty member at Dartmouth, and thus I was honored to be selected. I'm looking forward to using the leave time to work on my second book this fell and winter." Dean adds that he will join us at the Shaker Inn for dinner on Saturday, October 28. Dean is an assistant professor of government at Dartmouth and his special interest is electoral politics. Timely, what?
The Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship, a bold and creative initiative in philanthropy, and the very first of its kind in the nation, deserves our financial support. Send those appreciated securities kicking around your desk (or a nice crisp check) to: Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship; c/o Treasurer Charles Balch; 6070 Heards Creek Drive NW; Atlanta, GA 30328.
