Our good friend Mike Orr recently received a nice promotion to the position of chairman and CEO of Advanced Lighting Solutions Inc. and its AdMedia Inc. subsidiary. As reported in the June 30, 1999, edition of BusinessWire, Mike "has more than 25 years of retail sales experience with companies such as General Mills, Spalding Sports and Bausch and Lomb." Before joining AdMedia, Mike was president and CEO ofMBO Inc., a Greenville, S.C.-based general management consulting firm he founded to serve the sports industry. After Dartmouth he receive his M.B.A. from Tuck. I hope, Mike, the demands of your new position will still allow you plenty of time to pursue your passion for golf so that you can continue to hold onto your esteemed honorary title of class golf team captain, an honor coveted by Mr. Webster.
Charlie Strauss, is also in the news as the recipient of still another in a long line of promotions. The Westport (Conn.)Minuteman reported in its August 19, 1999, edition that Unilever announced that Charlie will succeed Robert M. Phillips as business group president, home and personal care, North America. Prior to this promotion he had been president and CEO of Lever Brothers Co. of New York. He had joined Unilever in 1986 when it acquired Ragu Foods, where he was president and CEO. After Dartmouth Charlie earned an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his wife and son now reside in London and Fairfield, Conn.
Your class executive committee met on October 24 at Pierce's. I am indebted to Allen Zern for taking very comprehensive meeting notes in my absence.
Much was covered: Some of the highlights included Jim Griffiths' announcement of our class's 1999 Special Recognition Award from the College; Hank Amon's announcement of the formation of the reunion giving committee with Hank, Russ Carson, and Chip Hayes as co-chairs; announcement that our next out-of-Hanover mini-reunion will be in Vail, Colo., in the winter of 2000-2001 to be coordinated by Ron Riley; announcement that the next fall mini will be October 27-29, 2000 (Homecoming Weekend against Harvard); more details on our 35th Reunion planning from Mike Bettmann and Steve Fowler with dates set for June 12-15, 2000; and the announcement of a new Class of 1965 Scholarship Fund to be initially funded with $1O,OOO from our class treasury. The class goal is actually to create at least four funds of $50,000 each (a named fund requires a minimum gift of $50,000) to provide scholarship aid to students at the College in perpetuity in the name of the class of 1965.
A total of 51 people enjoyed the mini again ran so efficiently by Sharon and Bob Blake. In addition, there was one current legacy, three future legacies and two past legacies at Saturday night's dinner. As a matter of interest, Bob reported that the class has had a total of 121 legacies attend the College so far.
