We begin with news from our foreign correspondents.. .Bob Donaldson was among a group of alumni who joined Nelson Armstrong '71, the College alumni relations director, for dinner recently in Geneva, Switzerland. Bob and his wife, Car olyn '86, are living and doing well in the Geneva area. Bob told Nelson that he has always wanted to see his name in the Class Notes section! I have a simple solution for Bob, and all you '84s out there with the same dream: WRITE
to your class secretary!!! Lauren Andersen writes, after an e-mail "nudge," that she is living in Central London with a British husband and their 6-year old son, who is bilingual (British and American)—"We quip that he's half and 'hawff.'" Lauren is running a startup medical technology company (which she co-founded in 1997) called Andersen Caledonia Ltd. (www.AndersenCaledonia.com), with plants in Scotland and France. She finishes, "after five international moves covering three continents in 10 years, I'm ready to stay put until my kid's in college!"
From Geneva and London we move to Kiev, where Geoff Berlin launched the Hertz franchise for Ukraine in March of last year. Geoff writes, "I had pulled together the capital to purchase the franchise through an investor group that includes a few Dartmouth alums and one '84." Geoff's Hertz franchise sponsored a fundraising project this Christmas, "Greeting Cards by Children in Ukraine." The gift pack raised funds for scholarships for Ukrainian students at the Children's Linguistic Research Center in Kiev. Check out the cards at www.clrckiev.kar.net.
Another 'B4 with international connections, even if he is presently stationed in D.C., and who gets his name in the column despite not writing personally to yours truly, is Curt Ollayos, who is a lieutenant commander with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. Curt wrote a letter in the last AlumniMagazine taking umbrage at a Dartmouth professor's recent characterization of the military as "grown men acting out childish fantasies." You can debate the issue with him at ollayos@afip.osd.mil.
Now back to old haunts and an update on homecoming from John Pryor, our hard-working mini-reunion chair. The weather wasn't so hot but we did (finally) have a presence at the Homecoming Parade! "A highlight of the weekend was a much better than anticipated football game against Cornell. The reception at the Top of the Hop was nice, and the kids that were there were well entertained by a magician as the alums from various classes gathered together."
We end with the second in our series of class officer profiles. This month's victim is Marianne C. McCarroll, our VP. "Born and raised in Lawrenceville, N.J.—single, no kids, never married. Was in p.r. and marketing in South Florida 1986-1997 in the deepsea fishing industry; last five years I was in business for myself, ran fishing tournaments, did newsletters, et. al. Decided to cash it all in and sold all possessions in August 1997, bought a motor home and left to see America. Have gone 36,000 miles so far and visited 42 states." After her travels Marianne plans on becoming a teacher at a private day/boarding school. She concludes, "It was pretty scary to walk away from a successful business and a full life of friends and fun things to do in Florida, but I have never looked back. Being on the road, my eyes are so open. I learn so much every day, meet many great people and have learned to really enjoy die people I am with and the places I do get to visit."
