Moosilauke: The Movie
MARCH 2000

Although the 60th anniversary of the building of the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge was celebrated last October, the tale of how the impressive log building came into being can be revisited in the Outing Club's new video, "An Unlikely Cathedral."

Through archival films and photographs, diary entries and interviews, the film tells the story of the magnificent log structure that, in the words of narrator Will Brown '37, is a "testimonial to doing a simple thing on a grand scale." Construction techniques used on the lodge were primitive even by 1938 standards. Picks, shovels and horse-powered derricks substituted for powered earth movers.

What began as a ski lodge in the midst of a 4,500-acre preserve owned by Dartmouth has evolved into a gateway to the College. Today it welcomes more than 800 freshmen on first-year trips. Copies of the video can be ordered from Kathy Decato in the Outdoor Programs office at (603) 646-2834. Cost is $29 plus $2.50 for shipping.
