As can be expected with more and more of us retiring, the Florida contingent of our class is getting larger every year. Some of these sun lovers maintain two homes, while an increasing number is moving South for a fall-time residence. This fact was brought home to Sandra and me when we traveled to Sarasota for what has become an annual epicurean event hosted by die gour- mand Tony Bruscino at the Cafe Baci. Tony, assisted by Gordie Lend and Ted Bremble, arranged with chef Roberto Mei for a lavish seven-course, three-wine repast that could not have been scrumptiouser. From Naples came Dick and Charlotte Barnett, Pete and Joan Shipman and Sid and Suzanne Devorsetz.Andy and Carole Thorns, Ted and Nancy Bremble and Tony Bruscino came over from Longboat Key. Crile Doscher drove up from Miami, where he continues to live on his 52- foot ketch. Cliff and Julie Phalen arrived from their home across town in Sarasota, where they stay 10 months of the year; the other two they're in Vermont. Mike Zissu with good friend Ellen Sullivan made it from Largo. (Mike's sonjake continues his career in the Navy and is now on an admiral's staff on operations in the South Atlantic. Mike couldn't be proud- er, and righdy so.) Gordie Lenci and Jeanie Gulbranson related that they are continuing to operate their bed-and-breakfast residence in South Dartmouth, Mass.
News of other '56ers in Florida included Chuck Ray, who had planned to attend but was detained by medical problems; BillCrate, who couldn't make it from Bonita Springs, and Bob Danziger, who has just purchased digs only doors away from Bremble. My College listing (1997) show a bunch more classmates in Florida, including Chuck Beard, Barry Bockus, WinBridge, Harry Dill, George Fenner,Harvey Hambleton, Phil Hinkle, ErlandJacobsen, Bob Johnston, MurrayKaplan, Ralph Maniscalco, StuMichaels, Dick Michelson, HarryHutting, Dave Perry, Bob Rapp, DaveRice, John Welborn and SamZucker...and this doesn't include a lot of snowbirds that I don't know about.
Everyone in Sarasota promised to get to our Fabulous 45 th Reunion in Hanover on June 11-14, 2001 (that is the summer after next). Plans are ongoing, and you will not want to miss it. Put it on your calendar NOW!!
