Karl Friedmann's son Karl '53 rang me just as I was writing these notes to tell me he read my plea in the last column looking for more '25s. Karl turned 98 in August and lives in Old Lyme, Connecticut, with his wife of 74 years, Sara, in their own home. Karl was a basketball player at Dartmouth, pursued teaching as a career, becoming president of Girard College, a school for orphaned boys ages 6 to 18 in Philadelphia. Retiring at 68, Karl and Sara moved to Old Lyme, where his hobbies were golf and gardening and he was an avid reader of history and government. Son Karl lives nearby and reports that both parents, assisted by live-in help, manage well and enjoy driving around their lovely old town. Congratulations to the two of them on 74 years of marriage. Thank you, Karl, the younger, for such happy news.
Larry Leavitt's grandson, Larry Leavitt '81, sent me a copy of a special issue of Vermont Academy's Life, which was completely dedicated to Larry and his wife, Dorothy. Larry took charge of Vermont Academy in 1934 when it was facing bankruptcy and had only 13 students and turned it into a first-rate school. For more on Larry and his time at Dartmouth, see the story on page 40.
