In a previous column I asked classmates to write about the "sense of place" the College left in your memory. Your replies have been forwarded to Dartmouth. An excerpt from Stet Whitcher's:

"I can't say that this was my favorite place, but it was the place that had the most influence in my Dartmouth experience. This was my first dorm room, 410 Middle Mass, a room on the backside of the dorm, facing west across a large grassy area (now a paved in parking lot) with the cemetery just beyond. My roommate was JoeBurnett, and we both were products of public school education, very naive with respect to schooling away from home. I had read The Dartmouth Hand-Book, 1936-1937, a Green Key publication, in advance, and now we awaited the potential hazing from the sophomores. We did not have long to wait before there was a knock on the door, and a burly individual of medium build with close-cropped hair presented himself with a greeting: 'Hello, I am Chick Koop and I live across the hall in 409; if I can be of help in any way, just let me know.' He and his roommate Mike Petti were both seniors, pre med, and they were our mentors, enabling us to get adjusted to the new college life. We were good friends through that year. Later on one was to be known as C. Everett Koop, the ex-U.S. surgeon general, and the other as Michael Petti, who would be syndicated in newspapers drawing medical cartoons."

Mickey Miller wrote, "My first roommate was Bob Rodday and our first room 203 Fayerweather. We were happy with each other and our neighbors for several years. We lived together in Phi Gamma Delta and lived happily together until we graduated from Tuck School. Of course there were many places and people that pleased us in such a fine school as Dartmouth but Dartmouth was 'my place' and I think I could not do better. Best regards. P.S. The sense never stops."
