Accomplishments and Accolades: Haig Kazaian Jr., chairman of the department of genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, has been elected to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars. The society—the first of its kind in the nation—inducts former postdoctoral fellows and junior or visiting faculty at Johns Hopkins who have gained marked distinction in their fields of physical, biological, medical, social or engineering sciences or in the humanities. Haig is an outstanding medical geneticist, and his work on the molecular diagnosis and treatment of hemophilia A is particularly important. Richard Macht, Ph.D., recently presented a lecture on the secret world of the Kabbalah and Franz Kafka. According to Richard, Kafka's stories were a means for prayer. They were, in the true sense of the word, "sacred art"—the rediscovery and practice of Kabbalistic ritual as a means of uniting oneself and the divine.
Always-traveling John Ferries reports a visit with Dick Finlay in Dallas. Dick moved to Dallas in 1963, married Charlotte, and they have twin sons and a daughter and are proud grandparents. Dick has enjoyed a successful career primarily developing real estate properties in Dallas and Santa Fe, where they enjoy a second home. Having shifted his "priorities," Dick has earned high honors as a leader in the prestigious Chevalier de Tastevin organization. Perhaps Dick can "upgrade" our tastes at our next reunion!
News from our "neighbors to the North": Bob Ogg reports from Mississauga, Ontario, that he, his wife, his daughter and her family live in nearby Ottawa. Last spring they toured Central Europe, cruising the Danube with a side trip to Prague. Bob also made sure they visited eastern Bavaria, his U.S. Army home of 40 years ago! Continuing their "good life," they visited the Penobscot Bay area of Maine this summer and sent me beautiful pictures of the Windjammers (schooners) that sail out of Camden. Bob said he had a recent e-mail from Vic King, who is on his way to Warsaw, Poland, to visit his son who operates a brewery-restaurant there. Bob and Maty are anxiously awaiting our next mini-reunion.
Sam Werner returned to Hanover this spring at the invitation of physics professor Jay Lawrence. Sam gave the department colloquium and also taught the freshman physics class- "great run, great students." Sam and Laura now live in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and plan to be at our next gathering.
Harry Jeffrey led a spirited group of 25 classmates to London on our second '59 tour. Ably organized and assisted by travel agent Pam Long, all "came back a little poorer, much wiser and with friendships renewed." As snow begins to fall and the heatwave of last summer becomes a memory, time to throw some wood on the fire and re-connect.
