Tides? We '63s have our share of doctors, CEOs, deans, presidents, publishers, judges, professors, chairmen, producers, even a congressman. Now we have a knight, Lou Gerstner, duly dubbed by Her Majesty the Queen. The damsel in distress was IBM, which Sir Lou rescued in 1993, changing multi-billion-dollar losses to 18-percent annual income growth. The WallStreet Journal reported in June that Sir Lou would soon hand over the chief executives title to IBM President Samuel J. Palmisano. The knighthood remains forever.

Our Congressman Don Sherwood (R-Penn-sylvania) delivered the commencement address last spring at East Strouds berg University of Pennsylvania. New York diamond merchant Adam Heyman pulled the hat trick in Hanover this fall, when daughter Katherine '05 became his third child to enter Dartmouth, following Gregory '96 and Douglas '98. Marjorie Culver '91 has followed in the footsteps of her father, Howard Culver, and is practicing law in Kirkland, Washington. Howard is counsel to a Long Beach, California, environmental firm. Max Binder, 13-year-old son of Big Apple Circus founder Paul Binder, hopes to attend Dartmouth. Max performs on horseback and studies at a school that travels with the circus.

PBS producer John Merrow has a new book, Choosing Excellence: 'Good Enough' Schools Are NotGood Enough, based on his 25 years of reporting on education. The book is the companion to "The Merrow Reports" most recent PBS program School Sleuth: The Case of an Excellent School, which won a George Foster Peabody Award, broadcastings highest honor. The Portland, Oregon, Commercial Association of Realtors and the Portland Business Journal presented its highachiever award to Clay Hering, chief executive officer and principal of Norris Beggs & Simpson, one of the regions largest commercial real-estate firms. Pittsburgh vascular surgeon Fred Jarrett has won a National Leadership Award from Congress for "assistance and guidance in the area of health care reform." Fred's son James '97 co-captained the Dartmouth crew, but two other children, Julia and Andrew, opted for Princeton. New York attorney Frank Wohl is chair of the city's civilian review complaint board, which investigates brutality, abuse, corruption and other citizen complaints against the police.

It was in the stars! Fred Chafee, astronomer and music lover, married Diana Andrews, pres- ident of the Hamakue Music Festival, overlook- ing the surf at sunset on the third tee of the Mauna Kea Beach Resort Golf Course, one of the most famous golf holes in the world. Not to be outdone, Charlie Logan exchanged vows with E. Claire Kennett on the enchanting Greek island of My konos after six years of courtship. BagsBerman settled for marriage on the U.S. mainland with Karen Kern, an artist. Bags and Karen each brings three kids to the party.

Many Dartmouth alumni are distinguished not only by what they have achieved in life but what they have done for the College. The late Dave Saunders, a prominent sociologist, was recognized with a plaque from the Dartmouth Club of Central Virginia presented to his parents Dero 35 and Beatrice Sanders and his widow, Mrs. Ronna (Ronni) Saunders.
