John Stockwell was seen basking in deserved praise as the University of Massachusetts Medical Center at Worcester celebrated his 25th anniversary. It has become the prime medical facility in central Massachusetts. John, of course, was the first hospital director and associate dean of administration. He is busy writing a history of the center and says it's tougher than starting a term paper due three days from now. He ought to try to write this column. John also reports seeing his old roommate, Wayne Whittemore, happily retired on Cape Cod with lovely wife, Doris. Matt Fenton (the worlds greatest putter) keeps playing golf while his family is busy with accomplishments. Mary Lou recently won several art awards in Florida, one of which was a truly gifted portrait of Matt. His brother Tom Fenton '53, chief European correspondent for CBS, just extended his contract for additional time. He works out of London but also covers the Middle East. Mike Marchese accomplished a feat on the golf course that we all aspire to but somehow eludes us—shot his age (and a little better) with a smooth 70. Any other done that? Phil Goodspeed? Bob Nutt? Bud Petersen? (Fat chance there.) Our newsletter guy, Bill Ballard (bilbal49@aol.com if you feel inclined to send him some news or complaints), tells me a review of the class records reveals some aging. No kidding. Seems that we have a classmate born in 1919. George Purvis, you are IT unless someone wants to stake a claim. Then there are two born in 1920-and several born in 1924 (ouch). Deke Jackson and wife Nadine have been doing a good deal of traveling in the past few years, largely in Europe and it sounds like one long wine-tasting binge. Our class prexy, the globetrotting Burt Proom, tells me that the Eddie Leede portrait project has reached it's $10,000 goal through the generosity of two of our classmates who set up matching gift options. Also, we are pulling out of the Lake Morey Inn and our mini-reunion banquet will be at the Hanover Inn this fall (September 28-30 for the Penn game). All other events are a they were (Faculty Lounge/Chez Thomas). Punchy is also working on a spring 2002 mini-reunion somewhere in the sun. More on all this in the next issue of the class newsletter. Unfortunately, I must report the deaths of three classmates: Doc Eaton in Fayetteville, New York, last December; Norm Scruton, in Kelso, Washington, in January; and long-time Dartmouth supporter Jim "Spike" Smith, in Exeter, New Hampshire, in January. Jim was also a Tuck School classmate. Each of these departed '49ers will be honored by the donation of a book to Baker Library with an appropriate plate. Many of us, too, have found that a donation to the Alumni Fund in their honor is a good way to say so long to lasting friendships.
