Bill Pierce, our 40th reunion chairman, writes to urge everyone to mark their calendars for Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13, 2002. Bill writes, "It is too early to have a definite schedule of events, but you can plan on arriving Monday during the day and departing on Thursday morning. Take additional time before or after the formal reunion program to enjoy New Hampshire and Vermont at a great time of year. Our emphasis during the coming months is to encourage all 1962 classmates, particularly those who may not have been past attendees, to return home to Dartmouth for this big reunion. Each class gathering in recent years has attracted new faces who now can't understand why they had not come before. Spouses, significant others, etc., are made to feel welcome. No one should feel nervous!"
Bill is looking for ideas, committee members and expertise, so contact him with any thoughts at wcpierce@worldnet.att.net. Another enthusiastic forward-thinking reunion committee person is Al Huck, who has already set up a reunion strategic planning room at his home in Cary, North Carolina. You can also share reunion thoughts with him at alexhuck@aol.com
Dan Tompkins certainly has put electrons in motion with the class Website, listservs and pithy comments. If you haven't signed up already, visit the class Website www.alum.dartmouth.org/ classes/62/ to see how to join. You might have learned that Roy and Gabriele Halstead recently posted a most generous invitation on the listserv: "Gabriele and I will be just outside ofVail from February 17 till March 3 in a rented house and we would love to have visitors from the class of '62. Looking forward to great skiing and good company." I expect that this electronic offer sparked many inquiries. (It also leaves us plodding print journalists in the electron dust!) Another recent interesting news item from Dan: "Ed Hermance has been running a wellknown Philadelphia gay and lesbian bookshop, Giovannis Room, since 1973: Quite a record! I've posted a link to it on the Website and after Eds name in the e-address list."
A recent business clipping reports that "Colgate-Palmolive is the global giant behind such household brand names as Colgate, Ajax, Murphy's Oil, Palmolive and, of course, Irish Spring. William Shanahan is the driving force behind the company's success. As president, Shanahan counts among his responsibilities the management of all the geographic divisions as well as the global marketing group." Bill played basketball at Dartmouth for four years and was captain our senior year. The article reports that he played a few years of pro basketball in the Philippines before joining Colgate-Palmolive. We learn from Julie Schuetz Lowe '76 about the Dartmouth Alumni Colleges Abroad family trip to the Galapagos Islands last June. Julie reports that the alumni group of 45 had "the time of our lives encountering the wildlife of the Galapagos." Among them was Stephen Serlin.
And remember to mark your calendars now for our 40th Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13, 2002!
