At the retirement party given by parents and students in honor of Hal Knapp's 43 years in public education, a brass band played "Dartmouth Undying" and the alma mater. Hals wife of 40 years, Carol, had called the alumni office, which e-mailed the words and music to help with the surprise. During his long career Hal taught English and history and served as a vice principal and principal.

Another educator, Phil Calkins, in June but "got stuck." The head of Phils school had announced his retirement at the end of the academic year, and Phil was stepping down as the business manager after seeing the new head through the transition. The problem: The search was unsuccessful. Phil has been named interim head of the school until a new person is named, which probably, given contractual considerations, will not be until the end of the academic year.

In April Peter Williamson made his third trip in a year to Montevideo, Uruguay, where he has led the introduction of epilepsy surgery to South America. Peter, who is the head of Dartmouth Medical School's epilepsy program, along with two other Dartmouth doctors led the Montevideo surgeons in five successful operations of epilepsy patients. The entire project, which was funded by a private U.S. foundation, cost less than $20,000, and has led to inquiries from Santo Domingo. Peter hopes eventually to expand the program to Central America and Eastern Europe and countries with emerging economies.

Closer to Hanover, Dave Bradley was, for the 14th time in a row, the top fundraiser for the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. This year Dave raised more than $18,000 and brought his total for the years he has ridden in the biking fundraiser to $193,00. Dave admits the 100 miles on the bike in one day doesn't get any easier with the passing years. He credits making it this year with the fact that, after making the turn at Woods ville, New Hampshire, and heading south in Vermont on U.S. Route 5 into a strong head wind, he was able to get behind and draft off of Dan O'Hara, who, Dave says, "is a very strong biker."
