Kudos to Mike Gazzaniga, our class intellectual, who was recently selected to be the new dean of the Dartmouth faculty. Mike was the unanimous choice of the search committee and, as a result of becoming dean, currently is the only Dartmouth official who is a Dartmouth graduate. Mike has almost single-handedly increased the intellectual and academic standing of our class among other "D" classes.

The next honor was bestowed upon Pete Hanauer, who received the American Lung Association /C. Everett Koop Foundation "Unsung Hero" Award. Pete was the former board president (three terms) of the Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights and has been active in tobacco control efforts since 1974. Since that time Pete has been directly connected to the growth and success of the tobacco control movement as one of the leaders and earliest proponents of nonsmokers' rights and clean indoor air.

Ron Fagin, where are you? I came to Savannah, Georgia, for the first time and was looking for some Southern hospitality from a classmate and fraternity brother. Unfortunately, you were out of town at a medical convention exactly when I was in Savannah. Was that intentional or merely a coincidence? I will have to try again some time.

The semi-annual spring meeting of the Alumni Council covered numerous areas of importance to both the College and its alumni.

These included the importance of maintaining Dartmouth's current size, the importance of diversity and inclusiveness to the Dartmouth educational experience, the need for better communication with the various audiences at Dartmouth and constituencies outside of Hanover, stronger internal financial management, the need for more undergraduate dorms, and the structure and governance of the Dartmouth Alumni Association.

The final topic of concern throughout these past several months has been whether to continue many of the rights and privileges previously granted to non-dues-payers within our class, primarily the continued receipt of the DartmouthAlumni Magazine (DAM) in spite of subscription costs increasing by approximately 40 percent next fall. There has been increasing vocal support to eliminate over some period of time non-duespayers from the DAM rolls. Various alternatives were discussed by the executive committee, with a decision due as to how our class should respond to the issues of substantially increasing rates for DAM. As of the June due date for this article to be submitted for publication, no decision had been reached as to which of the three alternatives presented should prevail.
