It's getting really difficult writing this column. You folks are too busy to fit everything in. I guess that's a good problem. Here's what you've been up to.
Rob Utzschneider, the ultimate Scrabble word, joined Ascential Software Corp. as executive director of platform business development. Rob was founder and VP of market development for Torrent System, Inc., which was acquired by Ascential. He resides in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In other corporate happenings, Bill Newell was recently named senior VP and chief business officer of QLT. The Vancouver-based outfit is a biomedical company that discovers, develops and commercializes therapies to treat cancer, eye diseases and immune disorders. Don O'Bannon is now VP of small and emerging business development at Dallas Fort Worth Airport. Don is a recognized expert in minority and women-owned business affairs. Julia Hunter was on the lecture circuit in Maine. The author of Fly Rod Crosby: The WomanWho Marketed Maine held a series of talks titled "Researching the Past: The World and Work of the Maine Historian."
There was a BIG bash hosting new Stanford football coach Buddy Teevens. We had a lot about the party plus pictures in the May newsletter, so I'll spare you most of the details. About 80 alums and spouses including about 15 '79s attended the party and a great time was had by all. Pictures are on the class Web site.
Lots of stuff from Phil Odence. Phil, Guy Van Wie, Norm Richter and Bill Conway took their 10th annual trout-fishing excursion to the College Grant. Guy runs the Bureau of Land and Water Quality for the State of Maine; Norm is senior tax nerd at Textron; and Billy is trying to get rich in the energy biz (while maintaining his personal code of ethics...tough task). Fishing was poor (Phil offered several excuses), but that gave them another item to add to the list of Dartmouth things that aren't as good as they used to be. They enjoyed hours of rocking on the Hellgate Hilton porch, admiring each other for having aged so gracefully. Spotted several moose over the course of three days and former Dean Ralph Manual, who has retired from Culver Academy and is back in the Upper Valley when he's not Ford Explorering around the Grant. Check the class Web site for pics.
At a separate event, Phil also met up with Dave Klinges and Mattie Donovan at the Rugby Club's 50th anniversary. Phil provided lots of details, but they are better shared in another forum, if you get my drift, and I knowyou do.
President Mitchell writes that several classmates will be mentors this summer in the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Program. Mentors meet with the students doing the community service internships to help them reflect on how their work will help their career and life. Teed up are Carol Anderson Shaw, TJ Crane (proud papa to the second known class legacy), and Libby Roberts. Carol, living in Seattle, has a daughter entering Washington this fall and two other high school girls that keep her up at night. Libby is VP for development at Northeastern University in Boston and TJ is an attorney in Orange County. Stopping in during reunions for the '77s was spouse Bill "Waldo" Clement. Waldo is a professor at the University of Idaho focusing on rocks research.
That's it. Keep em coming!
