It has been a very cold winter here in the Northeast and by the time you read this article, I am hopeful that warmer weather will have arrived and the snows will be gone. Wayne Hobbin reports that he spent a week skiing around the Dartmouth area and was happy to return to the more temperate climes of upstate South Carolina. He visited the Skiway on January 22, when the air temperature was minus-20 degrees Fahrenheit. He bravely skied about 15 runs before the frostbite began to set in. He then, discreedy, moved indoors. Wayne reports that Lou Bressett (the owner of Lou's Restaurant) recently passed away at age 85. Wayne also reports that the north end of campus (from Baker to the Med School) has changed dramatically. He bemoans the continued existence of Gerry-Bradley as the home for the math department and he was unimpressed with the new north wing of the library.

Glen Britt, chairman and CEO of Time-Warner Cable,was recently interviewed in Investor's Business Daily. Part of the interview dealt with the potential of "video on demand" and whether a full-fledged network-based setup, rather than a hard-drive setup, will be the wave of the future. He states that the main thing that will influence the cable business in the future will be the intense competition from satellite providers and phone firms in the Internet-access business. He also foresees major changes in the cable industry in the next five years.

I received a sad note from Nelson Armstrong of the death of Patricia Downing. A few years ago Pat (then retiring as the office manager of alumni relations) was adopted into our ranks. She was very thrilled to be an honorary member of the class of 1971 and proudly had as her license plate "Dart 71." She worked in alumni relations and at Dartmouth for 44 years, giving the office and the College a tremendous institutional memory and giving alumni someone they always knew they could depend on. While she never earned a Dartmouth degree, she treasured her status as a member of our class, and we have lost a good friend.

On March 31 our annual New York area dinner will be held at Rene Pujol Restaurant. Since news from classmates has been scarce, I am hopeful that the dinner will provide me with some information to pass along to you for the next issue!
