Harvard Weekend on October 29 and 30 should be upon us when this hits your mailbox. If you can, join the executive committee in Hanover for the victory (game or party) celebration. A class dinner is planned for Friday evening, and the executive committee will be meeting Saturday morning 9 to 11. Mail coming in at a moderate pace (always could be better)! Bart Palmer teamed this past July with John Voll '58 to team teach an Alumni College course at Washington and Lee University on "Understanding the Middle East" (Secretary's Note: A lot of people should take this course!) Bart teaches at Clemson, is an historian of Hollywood and has written widely on international cinema. He serves as general editor for the Traditions in World Cinema series in the Edinburgh University Press. Steve Calvert wrote recently. He has left North- eastern, and is heading either due west or northwest. Moving around the compass points. There was some biking buzz: Bob Block looking for fellow riders for a June Berkshire ride, Joe Grasso declining as he was getting married June 19 (congratulations Joe!), and Mark Waterhouse declining as he planned to be in Kentucky for the Great American Brass Band Festival. Will we get a review soon, Mark? I hope Bob didn't ride alone. Some of the emails have touched on transitions. Chris Mayer wrote proudly of son Zach's acceptance to Dartmouth, class of 2008. Zach has been a track guy, finishing second in the state in both the 100 and 200 meters. Zach will be a thirdgeneration Mayer: grandfather Al (1937) and uncle Al (1964) also attended. Ironically, Chris has lived for 31 years in the shadow of Baker, in Hartland, Vermont. His trips to visit his son won't use more than a tank of gas over four years! And in another type of transition, several e-mails from and among Pete Weston, Paul Rizzi, Ron Weiss and John Engleman let me know that Lew Joel passed away in late June of an apparent heart attack. Obituary follows in this issue. Keep the mail coming.
