Happy fall everyone! Heather Reeves married Gareth Norris on July 28 at Byron Bay, Australia. The happy newlyweds will be moving to England soon. Jonathan Shea sent word of his recent engagement to Karyn Brudnicki '01. "We'll be married next March in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. We hope it will be a big reunion for lots of Dartmouth and Ledyard people."
Now for a very funny vignette taking place halfway around the world in Shanghai, China: After visiting Julie Sasaki in Tokyo with his baby brother Isaac '05 in tow, Sammy Kardon found Jon Schlesinger (rank from a month of "steppe-ing" out in Mongolia with Jeff Kemnitz) and Pete Walgren. Realizing that the Kremlin is beautiful that time of year (summer), the three decided to take various trains across Asia together. Along the way they bought guitars and learned how to make them talk to rapt crowds in border towns and Manchu/Sibirsk outposts before splitting up in the dim, receding Moscow twilight—Sammy to law school at Harvard via Turkey, Jon to various Mediterranean civilizations and then a Ph.D. in East Asian history also at Harvard, and Pete to Stanford Law via Petersburg. In other news from far away, Derek Senft traveled to Klagenfurt, Austria, over the Fourth of July to compete in the Karneten Ironman Triathlon.
After finishing her first year at the University of Michigan Law School, Elizabeth L. Smith worked as a summer associate at Harrington, Foxx, Dubrow & Canter in Los Angeles. She just transferred to Columbia Law School and is excited to be in New York with so many of her friends from Dartmouth. Patrick Granfield has returned to D.C. after a year in the corporate world of Boston. He is teaching Western civilization and A.P.American history at St. Anslem's high school. He adds, "I miss the Red Sox but I am glad to be home closer to my girlfriend and family." Ryan Higgins wrote in to say that he'll be starting at Duke Law School this fall. There is now quite a contingent of Dartmouth '03s at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Sarah Mathew, who is enjoying home-cooked meals once again, and myself are first years in the medical school. We're joined by Jessica Adams, a first year in the dental school, and Erica Zilioli, a second year in the law school. Jess was recently visited by Rebecca Jennings, who is starting her second year of Teach for America in the Bronx and is in the process of applying to medical schools. Sarah let me know that her good friend Nick Giammaria just finished his training period in Armenia for the Peace Corps. He's now busy learning the language and planning an environmental community center at a local school.
Finally, here is an update on those talented animation experts from our class. Jason Kobilka is currently designing movie posters at a small studio in downtown Manhattan, having moved on from creating short video clips for sports arena jumbo-trons and a commercial for MTV's "Choose or Lose" campaign. David Powell is presently in an engineering Ph.D. program at Berkeley. He's researching materials to make the next generation of aircrafts resistant to ballistic impacts. Jason's project Robot and David's piece The Ultimate Souvenir are both being shown at animation schools in Europe and China. Both Maritza Aranda and Melissa Crounse have had their projects, Migration and Light, respectively, shown at the ChangChun Forum in China. Maritza is in Connecticut applying to medical school after an internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Melissa is working for IBM Strategy & Change in New York City as a consultant.
