We have heard about the University School. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, it graduated 16 seniors in 1936 into the class of 1940. The headmaster was proud, but he felt at least one could have applied to another ivy school! Who were the class of 1940 University School students? Ten have died:

Lee Bassett—CEO/director of S-P Mfg. Corp. in Cleveland (hydraulic cylinder manufacturing), sociology, Phi Delta Theta, Daniel Oliver Associates, Bait and Bullet, Natural History Club, Interfraternity wrestling champion, Mandel Comparative Literature Prize.

Elmer Browne—Merck & Company Inc., mainly international, eight years in U.K. and Europe; economics; Phi Kappa Psi; Phi Beta Kappa; Casque & Gauntlet; Palaeopitus; Green Key; class treasurer; Dartmouth Outing Club, president; Winter Carnival, chairman; Cabin & Trail; freshman track.

Dan Conway—left after freshman year, died as a flight instructor for Air Force.

Bill Duncan—sales Pickands Mather, Cleveland and Chicago; economics; Aegis, managing editor; Green Book board; Dartmouth interviewing; Alumni Fund agent; class officer.

Herb Foster—Cleveland heavy machinery manufacturing and insurance; economics; PhiKappa Psi.

Dick Goulder—left after junior year; joined brother in plastic moulding company; class agent; class executive committee; class secretary.

Dan Harris—worked at Case Observatory, Cleveland; died at time of WW II; mathematics; Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Senior Fellow; freshman golf; varsity golf, manager.

Bob Knutsen—president/founder, Knutsen Machine Products Inc.; economics; Phi Kappa Psi; Boot & Saddle; treasurer; Polo Club; Glee Club.

Bob MacMillen—education administration, Dartmouth College; economics; class secretary; class president; Alumni Council; class mini-reunion chairman; reunion treasurer; assistant class agent.
