The class of 1965 40th reunion in June was attended by 165 classmates and guests. The fun and fellowship was terrific despite Hanover providing the usual variety of weather experiences. Highlights included a very successful auction to benefit the Class Scholarship Fund, entertainment from Bob Murphy and his Charades, a pig roast and a retirement seminar, to mention a few.
At Wednesday nights dinner Hank Amon, class of '65 president for the past five years, presented President James Wright with a check for $27,932,789.65, representing the total of all '65 gifts to the College since the beginning of the current capital campaign in July 2002. A second check for $500,065 represented gifts from the class in the past year. During this period the Class of '65 Scholarship Fund was increased to the point where we now have four class scholars. Class participation in the giving was 398 classmates, or 65 percent. Many thanks to Hank for all of his work on behalf of the class.
Officers for the coming five years were elected at the class meeting: president, Ken McGruther; secretary, Roger Hansen; treasurer, Bob Murphy; newsletter editor, Carl Boe; head agent, Jim Griffiths; mini-reunion chair, Bob McConnaughey; Webmaster, John Sotile '64; VP for out-of-Hanover minis, Bob Blake; VP West Coast, Ed Keible; VP projects, Mike Gonnerman,45th reunion co-chairs, Ted and Marcia Atkinson and Bruce and Betsy Wagner; Alumni Council representative, Hank Amon.
Ken's No. 1 goal during his term as president is increasing participation in any and all aspects of class activities.
During the Columbia Weekend, October 21 to 23, Pierces Inn will again be the venue for our fall mini-reunion. Please contact Cindy and Bruce for reservations at (603) 643-2997 or (piercesinn@Valley.net). Steve and Linda Fowler will again host a wine and hearty hors d'oeuvres gathering at their home Friday evening. Bob and French McConnaughey (mccon2@comcast.net) chair the mini-reunion effort and would be happy to hear from you with questions or suggestions.
Sadly, Charles Renfrew Thomson died of cardiovascular collapse on July 3. After Dartmouth he served in the Army, including a tour in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. Thereafter he was a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Our sympathies go to his wife, Louise, and children.
Among those at the reunion was Jim Ramsey, complete with rowing shell. Last fall he was inducted into the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame. We also received word that Mike Urbanic, of Dartmouth's undefeated Lambert Trophy Team, was inducted into the Loraine High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Hank Amon writes: "My daughter Sally was married on Saturday, August 13, to Luke Tans ill. The wedding took place in Vail, Colorado. In attendance were the following members of the class of 1965 and their spouses: Dick Bordeau, Paul Pringle, Norm Leach, Russ Carson and Steve Waterhouse. My daughter Lindsay '94, Tu'04, was maid of honor." Congratulations!
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the class of 1965 Web site, www.dartmouth.org/classes/65/, and be in touch with me to share news of yourselves and classmates.
Best wishes for a good autumn season.
