Happy 2008 to everyone. I am bemoaning the lack of snow in the Philadelphia area this winter. Guess I'll have to travel to the snow. How many of us still strap on skis and fly downhill in the winter? Or have you defected to a snowboard? We were spoiled having the Skiway so close to campus—and you couldn't beat the price of a season pass!
The November35 Years of Women at Dartmouth Celebration weekend saw a number of '77s return to Hanover, including Peggy Bensinger, Leslie Embs Bradford, Betsy Cox-Buteau, Susan Dentzer, Maura Harway, Karen Keegan, Elizabeth Kent, Jan Malcolm, Linda Markim, Elizabeth Michelman, Carol Muller, Heidi Osborn, Ellen Sullivan Sen, Betsy Fauver Steuber, Robin Gosnell Travers, Nancy Parsinnen Vespoli, Allison Grant Williams and Suzanne Wiley Young. Ellen Sen wrote to say, "My twin daughters Karen and Paula are in the class of 2010. One of my favorite aspects of the weekend was introducing my daughters to my college friends. Reconnecting with old friends was a real comfort. Seeing the younger and older alumnae gather for discussions of career paths, life's ups and downs and stories was truly inspiring and empowering." Linda Markim wrote: "I had attended the first alumnae reunion 10 years ago—it was the first time I'd returned to Dartmouth and felt the College belonged to me as much as to any other alumnus. Following Saturday morning's breakfast there was a program about Title IX and its impact on women's sports at Dartmouth and throughout the nation. For me it was the perfect beginning to the weekend, linking me in my present life as CFO of a sports and fitness company to my past at Dartmouth. I appreciated hearing President Wright's comments about the meaning of coeducation and his acknowledgement of the painful experiences many of us from the early years endured.
Betsy Cox-Buteau has an 'li daughter on campus and lives in Hollis, New Hampshire. Betsy is a middle school principal and finished her doctorate in education two years ago. She commented: "As frustrating as it can be at times, I enjoy working with my community. Many of my students come from tough homes, drugs, single-parent homes. It's a different world, but it can be very rewarding when you make a difference. Betsys husband, a Harvard '76, is a computer scientist with NorthropGrumman and they are finally empty-nesters and enjoying it.
Jeff Lyon chimed in with his good news: "Christmas came early this year, as our youngest daughter Jill got her early-decision acceptance for the class of 2012. She joins sister Kate '05 and brother Jason '10 in Hanover. Jill has been a top three-sport athlete at her high school and plans to do both basketball and track at Dartmouth."
