Remember our freshman fall and how oblivious we all were to the gas crisis back home? I recall being shocked at the gas station lines when we traveled home after fall term. Now I'm equally as shocked after seeing prices over $3.80 a gallon in Washington, D.C., yesterday! The nice part of my trip was visiting with my daughter Kimberley '06 and having lunch with Nancy Bird. Nancy had recently returned from a CIA-sponsored trip to Cairo and shared a picture of herself riding a camel around the pyramids!

Now to your news—thanks for continuing to send me your updates! Aimee Kent Ballantyne recently was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Adopt-A- Street Program of Broward County, Florida, for her efforts in the prevention and removal of roadside litter in her hometown of Coral Point. In stressing the relationship between crime and litter, Aimee mobilized many volunteers to improve the environment of her community.

The University of Richmond recently named John Douglass dean of the Richmond School of Law. He joined the Richmond law faculty in 1996 and was honored with a Distinguished Educator Award in 1999. His wife, Cindy Strange Douglass, teaches Upper School English at the Collegiate School in Richmond. Their daughter Erin graduated from Duke and will begin her pediatrics residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Son Scott '07 is pursuing a career as a professional musician.

Norfolk, Virginia, attorney Andrew Sacks was installed as president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association for 2008-09. He recently helped establish the Virginia Criminal Justice Conference, bringing together prosecutors, criminal defense attorneys and judges to facilitate improvements in the criminal justice system. He received the Leader in the Law Award in 2006 from Virginia Lawyers Weekly for his work on the conference.

Jonathan Bagger, currently Krieger-Eisenhower Professor and chair of the department of physics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University, was named vice provost for graduate and postdoctoral programs and special projects. He has twice been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and is a member of the National Research Council's board on physics and astronomy and vice chair of the Energy Department/National Science Foundation high-energy physics advisorypanel.

Peter Szilagyi's wife, Moira, and daughter Kate '03 wrote to tell me that Peter was elected and is currently serving his tenure as president of the Academic Pediatric Association, one of the largest and most prestigious organizations of pediatricians and researchers in the United States. Peter, they wanted to surprise you with this recognition in the Alumni Magazine. Moira and Kate are very proud of you, noting that "not only is he a prolific and nationally recognized researcher, he has dedicated his career to improving health outcomes for vulnerable and under-served children."

Vinnie Pellegrini was elected second vice president of the American Orthopaedic Association. He will become president in June 2009. Vin was one of our '77s who went on to graduate from Dartmouth Medical School. Send more news!
