Tom Ewing writes, "The big news in Nashville is that my wife, Deanna, and I have had our first baby. Miranda Kathleen Ewing was born on February i. Too happy for words. I'll relate a Dartmouth story about her name, Miranda. Deanna was pushing for the name Miranda. Something about the name set off a memory from my days as a classics major. Sure enough, when I pulled out the old Latin grammar text we discovered that Miranda is the gerundive, or future passive participle, form of the verb 'mirror,' meaning 'to wonder.' Recalling that the gerundive implies a sense of obligation, I realized the name literally means 'she who must be wondered at.' It seemed like the perfect name for a baby being born to a 50-year-old. Recognizing that my translation skills might be a bit rusty, I contacted Roger Ulrich '77, who had been in Latin classes with me and now chairs the classics department at Dartmouth. Professor Ulrich vetted our translation, though suggested we tone it down to 'should be wondered at.' Looking forward to introducing her to everyone at our reunion."
Congratulations to Tom and Deanna on Miranda, who is maybe destined to be Dartmouth class of 2030 and a rising senior at our 50th reunion? For, borne on the night-wind of the past, Through all our history, to the last, With hours of learning and sharing and joy, We classmates will return to under the Pine The strong minds and hearts we will employ, To build reunion friendships of '79.
